Hi, is it possible to switch out of a categorical program after 1 year, and apply to other fields (anaesthesia, neurology, or other IM program), or are we obliged to serve 3 years in the program?? I heard that contracts are signed on a yearly basis, meaning we can switch out, does anybody have any idea about this....thank you...

that is really hard, well if you switch after one year then you have to find a PGY2 position at some other program if it is categorical. In anesthesia you can get in the first year position. This one year program contract is really made in favor of hospital. So that they can deal with you at the end of one year if you are not fitting good in the program. You can't take advantage from it. If you are doing good in prog it is not gonna let u go. In order to apply for the other program, you need a recommendation from the PD of the program you are currently in and it has to be positive one. And you need a very positive and decent reason to explain you plan of quitting your existing program. However the new prog that you are going to go will defiantly keep in mind about your swing of future goal and will consider you unfocused. so bottom line is , It is possible but it not advisable or wise to do.

Don't forget that a program is not obligated to even give you time off to interview. You may have to use your vacation to interview.

maoudoody, i don't think you understood what bbb meant...you will be applying, attending interviews, and matching during your first year...so no program will be obliged to give you time off for interviews, so you will have to manage that during your vacation time...

so one can participate in the match while he is already in residency program?!!! that seems weired but also good......cause u can apply in silence and participate in match and during ur one month vacation attend the interviews and wait for march for result....if not matched complete ur residency and no one will know unless one of the programs called ur program director asking about u!!!!

Well, if it's a preliminary medicine program, every intern will have interviews during the year, so we wouldn't be asking for more time off compared to other interns in the preliminary program....

As a prelim medicine intern you are working with categorical medicine interns, and earning the same amount of money. Is it fair that you have days off to look for work without using vacation. The answer is no. The categorical interns would have to carry your patients and theirs. I'm just pointing out that you should count on using your vacation to look for work. It's the way that the system has worked since I started in the field hundreds of residents ago.

Dear bbb, Could you please shed some light on this depressed and frustrated soul on how to look for open PGY-2 spots? I desperately need one for 2008.

Emailing and telephoning programs. It's the only way. Late January to early February is the time when I know that my current residents are staying or going.
