A program i interviewed at is in financial crisis. the residents there told that frankly. they are saying hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. so what will happen if such a program closes off in 2nd or 3rd year . then the residents will be no where . right?

it is fully going to the match. so, should i rank such a program or not. bcoz if we match there we are obliged legally to take the position. !!!

so should i leave it out of the rank list or should i rank that program at last.

bbb and other forum friends....plz give your opinions.

Thank you

I would rank it last- In the worst case, you will have completed 1 year of internship and that will add to your CV than being unmatched and doing observerships-
In my opinion its better than having nothing-plus you will get paid ! At least for me personally going through this MATCH stuff once, is expensive enough and I dont think I can afford to do it again without earning anything for another year
My point is- if you dont match, you will be nowhere (unless you are counting on the scramble)- if you match there at least ou will be somewhere -at worst for only a year; at best may be completing your residency

jdi;i'm not an expert and this is only my humble opinion. if the program still participating in residensy, that by itself means alot. they could get bought off or gov. can step in and bail'm out. this is a hospital not a local super market. there have been few hospitals in south calif w/ fincl prblms and they were bought off by various healthcare sestems. btw these days it's very hard for stand alone hsptls to stay afloat financialy.
ps; does any one have the stats how many hsptls have closed in the "let say" last 10 yrs.

A PD said that if a program closes there are some policies that it is mandatory for them to find you a new spot in another program, and that other programs can open spots to take them...
So I would rank all programs, despite their financial issues... the more unstable a program the lower it would go on my list, and also for the reasons discussed by hypomanic.
