Ok guys. A friend of mine needs some of your input. She had an interview at Lutheran Medical Center, NY......this past week. According to her, the directors were pleased with the interview, and offered her a prematch. GREAT, right ?! Well, not exactly. She has been given until this Monday to make a decision. PD says that all his/her positions are filled through prematch, and any remaining positions open are only offered to AMGs in match. Since this is last week of IVs, apparently, in Lutheran....she must make a choice.

She's going bonkers over this. Her creds are fairly decent (wont reveal without her permission), but they are in 80s-90s range. She graduated in 2005 from the same school I did....UNIBE.

Anyways, I know you guys are great, and a lot of you are very familiar with NY hospitals. PLEASE ADVISE on PREMATCH !!!!!!! Should she accept it or try her luck somewhere else ? BTW, she's been pretty busy this season in IVs, so that is not an issue. I think last count, she had it around 20 interviews scheduled.

PLEASE ADVISE BEFORE MONDAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nod

PS - No guys. It's not me, or you know I wouldve told y'all. grin

I would take it if it's among my top 3-5 choices (considering she has > 20 IVs) ... but that's just me....

I would take it. The places we fmgs get interviews from regardless of our credentials fill 50% - 100% psoitions thru pre-match. That means there are half positions left by the time match comes and we will be competing against all sorts of applicants. Competition will be much more tougher.
thats just my opinion. Lutheran isnt in the bad area either, residents are a mix of indo pak chinese and Americans who went to carribean. So all in all not a bad program.

HI sarika.

Seems like our paths have crossed more than once. I read your review on Monmouth. Just went there this past week, and absolutely loved the area. Very decent, quiet, and peaceful. Looks like they offer prematch; they told me to write to them if interested. Am thinking about it, but Im afraid the patho is not so diverse. Seems a little too laid back. Your thoughts ?

Also, have you interviewed at Lutheran Medical Center. I have one there this Friday. Im not expecting a prematch, but you never know. Could you explain some more about this program please. Seems liek you know more than meets the eye.

Thanks.

1 day left. Any advice friends ?

Why she is thinking ??

Unless really bad place or she really cannot stand it , prematch is pot of the gold, since NY NY , what else can u ask for more , especially diverse as orlando said .

Even bad place , 3 yr is passing very easily , chance come once , if miracle happen may b twice , but it is her life , she should have calm , open mind, heart to see she like to go for it or not .
For me I love NY , so why not , but I am not planning for this yr .

I am not trying to throw a shadow on the urge to accept it but here is my opinion:

- on the one hand she has 20 IV's- this ispretty admirable. I don't know the caliber of the rest of her interviews ; the biggest question here is is this hospital at least in her top 5 or was the application there more like a safety net? If it's in top 5 and she has seen at least 1-2 from the rest in her top 5 then I would agree- accept the position an move on. BUT if this is not really a top choice (sounds more like it from what I read) then I would say- think about it twice! From my experience so far I get the feeling that we FMGs often times try to sell ourselves really cheap...Yeaaah, 3 years is not an eternity and it will all go by, but do you really want to spend 80hrs/week in a place you don't like so much? with people you really cannot connect with? because for good or for bad this hospital will be your home for the next 3 years and the foundation for your following career. Have you thought about fellowship? what and where do you see yourself doing after residency? Just some food for thought...

It's a horrible position to be in...making such a decision under this kind of pressure. I wish best of luck and may the best happen!!!

Agree. But it is just my opinion. She is the one that has the last word.

Hi medicus. No, this was true about a friend of mine. She had interview at Lutheran last week, and they offered her prematch. But she decided to reject the offer. I had mine this week, and they offered me as well...even though I did not expect it. Unlike her, Im very interested in the program. Im not too high on fellowships (as of now), so Im thinking about grabbing it before it is too late.

What do you think ? nod

i was also interviewed and offered prematch at lutheran, but i didnt take it, becos, the program sounds so desperate saying u have to tell them right now and doesnt give enuff time to decide. not a very good program from what i heard from the residents, too much work, no research ,no fellowships, no good electives.. just like slaves working more than 80 hrs a day. if there r better interviews, dont take it. my two cents.
