A PD is measuring your fit with his program. And if they said that they would rank you competetively, then you will be on their list. Your next step is to fit them on your rank list .
(It's not a hidden agenda, it's very easy....)

I don't know if there are really any signs that I can say would cover every program. Everything is so dependant on you and the interviewer. Which is why when I have a group of applicants, I try to get them to relax and be themselves.
