PML is a rapidly progressive neuromuscular disease caused by opportunistic infection of brain cells (oligodendrocytes and astrocytes) by the JC virus" polyomavirus". affects primarily individuals with suppresed immunity ( transplant recipient leukemia lymphoma ///AIDS= 10% of cases...) clinical presentation: mental deterioration " memory failure cognition failure", vision loss, speech disturbances, ataxia ,paralysis " hemiparesis extreme muscle weakness facial weakness dysphagia... and, ultimately, coma reflecting the multifocal distribution of brain lesions. In rare cases, seizures may occur. trt is supportive.. actually no specific or cure trt is available... usually death occurs within 1- 4 months after the onset of the disease. hope t-his will help you asmi. :icon_study:
