Odessa is an oil town. The residency coordinator said it is hard to find an apartment bec of the oil workers. The program seems to be a busy one. Alot of patients for only 6 residents. I am going back there tonight for a second look interview. Anybody have/had a second look with Texas Tech Odessa?

CaliMD, How did your second look interview go? Did you get to do rounds and listen to the noon conference? What did you think? Did you ask for a second look or did they offer it to you? I heard that it is better to live in Midland which is 20 mins away. Faculty is great. I did not get to meet many residents. Please let me know how it went. Thanks

Hi Allison, I did not ask for a second look. They emailed me inviting me to their program. They even paid for my airfare again bec I told them that I am short in funds! I asked the residency coordinator if there are other candidates and she said I was the only one they invited back for a second look. They already prematched 3 positions and have 3 available spots for the match. I had 2 interviews with the faculty again in the morning, lunch with two residents and two interviews with the PD and another faculty after lunch. I was able to observe the residents in the clinic during my interview wth the PD. It was all very casual. The PD said the apartments in Odessa is nicer but the houses are not while in Midland the houses are nicer and the apts are not. Midland is the next town but no traffic so you can choose which town you want to live in. The only disadvantage of the program I think is that the residents are really busy. Their daily census in inpatient service is 30-38 a day. They said they already lowered that number down. Other than that the program is great. They have alot of new ideas and projects like medical students rotating by 2009, OB rotations in El Paso bec not enough OB deliveries in Odessa. You have one month rotation in El Paso ( 4 days you work and 3 days off- not bad). The residents were all friendly. Most or all IMGs. How high will you rank this program if you don't mind me asking. Good luck in the Match!

Hi CaliMed, Thanks for all the information about the FM program in Odessa. I also think it is a great program, but I am a little concern of its location. I do plan to rank it high. I would like to ask you a few more questions since you got to see that residents working. Could you please e-mail me at chapina_md@hotmail.com Thanks in advance.
