precisely the reason i've started a thread..honestly i am at a loss, but have concluded that if the program is really interested, they'll atleast reply to ur email or thank you letter..if they dont reply, doesnt neccesarily mean that ur out, but certainly means that ur not in the selected group by which the program was highly impressed..u might be in the larger group which would be sorted out by the resident selection commitees at a later date..also since programs are very busy(no second guessing that)..it is hard to reply to every email, especially promptly..at the end of an interview, if the person interviewing me doesnt even acknowledge my credentials(even superficially), i dont keep high hopes there..again i dont mean that people should go ga-ga over my qualifications..but if i were interviewing somebody..just for the sake of courtesy, i would comment on their qualifications..but if it is only"good luck" or "I am sure you would match" etc etc..i seriously think they have found better candidates than me..but in the end it dont matter..while submitting your ROL,always keep programs u like on the top..thats how it works..so attempting to get any feed-back, for me, is only to allay my anxiety..it wouldnt influence my ranking..good luck

It's a thank you letter - they aren't meant to be replied to. If you send me a thank you letter, I don't thank you for a thank you letter. Then you would have to thank me for thanking you for your thank you letter. Don't over think a none-response to a thank you. It can mean absolutely nothing......

LOL..we would need a separate ERAS to keep track of that ..but what confuses me is: A. If not replying to a thank you letter is the norm, how come some reply and some dont..(this may be a matter of personal choice, but still roughly half do it and half dont>.) B. if people interview at the same program, by the same person..the person replies to some and not to others..even the reply to each is different. They could write a generic"ur welcome, it was a pleasure meeting you", but it turns out, it may be significantly different.

The same reason that some applicants send a thank you note and some don't. Don't look too hard at this stuff, it's not worth wasting the neurons....

Just today when I was interviewing the PD told me how annoying this thank you notes can be- for the sole reason that people read too much into it! If as a PD you don't reply, the applicants get nervous that you didn't like them and if you do reply but at the end they do not match at your program (because you did not rank them as high )you get angry calls and accusations of misleading! maaan, just leave that thank you note stuff! behave as adults and use common sense. don't give into those mind-games! Do you seriously believe that anybody would say - he/she is a great applicant but I won't rank her/him high because they did not send a thank you note???!!!??the thank you note is the last thing to get you into residency. period.

medicus, you probably misunderstood the point in ur (emotional)response..it is not about whether to write it or not(common sense dictates we should for 1.inviting us 2. allowing us a good time with the residents, lunch etc..)..the confusion is about the varied response to the letters, which BBB advises not to read much into..and again, if program directors on one hand tell us to write anytime to them and on other feels that it is annoying, why dont tell it outright that dont write to us, we wont bother..that would be beiong truthful, and i am sure no body wont mind/consider it rude..because it applies to everyone.

gingko, sorry if my response was too emotional ) PDs/PCs usually usually advise to write anytime with questions...They do not specify : please don't send us thank you notes, we cannnot reply to all and they don't mean as much - because it sounds pretty rude...Yes, I agree that we can (should?) thank them for the day BUT don't forget: how much money, effort and time did you spent on your part and nobody says: thank you, hehe... It's a mutual effort on both sides, they want good applicants/future residents as much as you want a good program, right? Again it's up to your personal opinion whether you should write a thank you or not but I again concur with the statement- don't read too much into response vs. no response, that's all, I think we are all on the same page on this one. and I did not mean to offend anybody

Absolutely!!! If I had a nickel for every thank you letter where an applicant told me that we were going to be ranked #1 - then they matched somewhere else. Heck, I'd be in Mexico living the good life on a beach. Don't read to much into a non-response. All it means is that they didn't respond. Nothing else.....
