one thing that helped me in exam was, that i got myself comfortable with interpreting the lab values and with long passage questions......... i know all most of us find them scary ,i did too........... but there was only one way to shed my fear and i practised a lot of them in UW and after a while i really started to love them.the fact is,on real exam some of the one line questions are more troublesome than those long ones....... a long question means two things: it gives you many clues to the answer, but since the guys who write questions are great at their job it also means a lot of misleading words.........so when you face a long question,be prepared to hunt down the right cues and also to reject and ignore the red herrings. i'm too imaginative and sometimes to keep myself from getting exhausted i treated those questions as i was sherlock holmes facing a new client.those who've read SH will know exactly what i mean. more laters.........

Thanks! you asked a tough one.......... i mean its difficult to answer without knowing the kind of distractions you're referring to let me still try......... hmmm make a list of your priorities, like what all you want to achieve in life.then draw a line and write down all thee things that stop you from achieving them(your distractions come here).from personal experience i know very well that sometimesone of our goals itself becomes a distraction to something else we want to achieve........ am i right?if that's the case.understand one thing, vthere are very few things in life where you have control......... most of the things and situations come our way and we have to either accept them as we are or adapt ourselves to them......... ".....there is only one thing we have absolute dominion over.""OUR MINDS" its not me......... someone much wiser said those words and i believe him.so just try to control your own mind and you will see those distractions no more being able to distract you. did that help? i honestly want to help you but i'm getting nowhere..... if you can tell me more i could help.PM me if you don't want to post.if you got your answer already let me know,i'l be at peace then.

Hi anuba! I found these tips some where. So I am posting them here as they may help you; Tip 1 Some weeks or days prior to the exam, use an index card to list several of your greatest personal strengths and attributes. E.g; I am an intelligent and caring person. I react well under pressure. I am going to be a great (fill in career goal). Keep the card handy so that whenever negative thoughts intrude while you are studying or practicing, you can pull the card out, read each statement and reflect on your abilities. Luxuriate in the calm, positive feelings that are associated with each of these true statements. Fairly soon, you won’t even need the card because you will know the statements by heart and be able to mentally review them as an antidote to the welling up of negative thoughts. Tip 2 Keep a master tally sheet nearby each time you sit down to study. Make a tally or hash mark each time you find yourself engaging in negative thinking, daydreaming or otherwise mentally escaping from the study situation. For many students, the mere act of tallying reduces the frequency of these behaviors and they find that their daily tally decreases over time. This is really a mild form of behavior modification that you can apply to your own study behavior. Though simple, it works well for many people. Tip 3 Months (or at least a few weeks) prior to the exam, spend some quiet time thinking back in your life to recall an event in which you were the hero of the situation. Now spend at least 10 minutes each day in a quiet place reliving this event, trying to bring back the memory in as much detail as possible. As you practice, it will take less and less time for you to get back the memory in graphic detail. The purpose of this exercise is to allow you to mentally revisit the event quickly, because stored with this event memory are all of the associated feelings of being in control, being a successful problem solver, being confident, being a winner. When used as part of a time-out in an exam, these associated emotions then act to counteract the negative emotions associated with the test-taking process. Happy concentrated studying!!

hi rx,i remember those tips you just mentioned.. in fact i did jot them down and followed the tecnique of tallying for a couple of days... its good...... but my distractions were uncountable in those days so i ended up filling pages with just those tally marks..... but the first and the second ones were something that really changed my outlook to life and got back my lost self pride and confidence to some extent. so nice of you to post them here..... thanks a lot.

Yeah SOS! You are absolutely right The 2nd one might not be helping appearently. But at least you can get exact idea as to how much do you get wandered here and there in thougths. Personally I loved the 3rd tip. And it has helped me enormously. I will suggest to all those who encounter hopelessness and are not confident of their capabilities. They must do this exercise frequently by visualizing the day they got the entrance into the medical school. That was a great achievement to get through the compitition at that stage of life. You will certainly start feeling yourself being revived of all those spirit you had in those days. Likewise the 1st one helps too. I will suggest to write down your best grades or marks attained in school. It will be a positive feedback to recall that see when I could do that great..I CAN even do this one day!
