i got a questions on uw path, that a patients has pain while walking and goes away with rest, i thought it was buergers disease, but they said it was atherosclerosis,
there was another question same claudication, and they added test with tobaco, and that was buergers disease.

i thought claudication is only in buergers, can anyone clarify this?
thanks

buergers is a PVD...and cause of buergers is atherosclerosis most commonly in smokers...either they must have not given Buergers as a choice or they must have asked something else i guess.....if possible, post the complete q

Buerger's disease is inflammatory-thrombotic obliteration of small to moderate sized vessels... usually distal to popliteal artery.. it is strongly associated with smoking and seen in younger population than atherosclerosis....

Atherosclerotic vascular disease is seen in older population than Buerger's.. involve larger vessels- femoral, popliteal.. commonly associated with atherosclerosis of other systems, diabetes, hypercholestrolemia

Both produce intermittent claudication..

plastic surgery , you are right about age, the question of atheroscleoris was elderly and buerger was young.

But Buerger will also produce pain at rest and if the ur pt is young at a smoker but also a diabetic and has intermittent claudication then wht ??

Any bets.....
PS Dont look it up just play odds and think over it u will get the answer....

new_n_lost, I don't have clue for your question...would guess atherosclerosis....

one comment though.. rest pain is not specific to Buerger's... rest pain signifies critical ischemia that can not provides eough oxygenation even at rest... like unstable angina or angina at rest... rest pain is due to ischemic nerves..

But in peripheral vessel disease or claudication in arms and foot or small & medium sized vessels rest pain is indication of adding Buerger in ur DDs

It was a continuation on the subject of Claudication in reference to age or any other predisposing risk factors.

PS Didnt mean to offend you.
