Everyone used to tell me to apply to Fam Med programs as backups, just in case you didnt get the IVs you wanted from your primary specialty. Well, I dont know about you guys.......but FAM MED is no joke ! Maybe the competition is up, but the calls are very rare and exotic, IMO.

Ive gotten some IVs, but from the exotic places (I wont name the places, but they're up there).

Anyways, I think FAM MED is on the rise, and is no longer the "safe bet". Actually, I think it's safer to apply to INT. MED spots when it comes to "safe bet".

Any thoughts ?

the numbers show that IM is on the rise of competition moreso than FM. just look at the last 2-3 years, it's in the numbers. i think all specialties are getting more competitive for spots, just because of the number of applicants applying each year.

i think this year we are going to be shocked with how many applicants were in the match process.

I think its because applicants are applying to more than one speciality that causing the overflow of applications
