Most of the success stories I have read here at the forum so far: IF they used Kaplan, it was the Kaplan Lecture notes plus DVDs. I am using this approach as well. I have heard very little about the home study program, and whatever little I heard, it was not very appealing.

I know 2 doctors, who read Home Study Program and passed exam succesfully. But they say me: result depends from quality and quantity reading. 2 or3 times + UW+ FA. If you have different information........?

From an email I got from Kaplan: "... Both set of books cover the same amount of material. The main difference is that the Home study books are organized in organ systems, while the Lecture books are organized by discipline. Also the Lecture books have been designed to work hand in hand with those students attending the live courses. ..." Hope this helps. I have yet to decide which one to use. If they really contain the same material then I am probably going with the HSP as my curriculum is organised by organ systems, too, and I am used to that system, sort of.

From what I had learned from other's experiences, almost all those who depended on Kaplan, used Kaplan Lecture notes and the video lectures/ live lectures that supplement the notes so as to get a good grasp on the concepts. Moreover, when I signed up for Kaplan, and watched the DVDs, I liked it a lot--2 reasons: because they were discipline wise books and the professors made me really understand and like the material. With the home study program, this option was not available and one had to rely on just the system-wise study of the Kaplan Home study books. Well, this was my understanding...I did not go into looking for deals on ebay (selling the HSP) as I was just interested in getting a solid foundation first (subject-wise) before I delved into a system-wise study. I guess what I am saying is that it is upto you to choose which way works better for you......analyze where your strengths lie, if you are a recent grad/ old grad, if you are the kind who would benefit from watching lectures (either video or live) to choose the Kaplan lecture notes vs the Home Study Program. I definitely don't think that the Home study program notes/ content per se is not good/ appealing. I just feel that the format is not as good as the discipline wise lecture notes (for me). Hope this clarified it a bit! Good luck

Oh, and while we are at this discussion, I must mention that I have heard some really good things about the Pass Program, just so you know that Kaplan is not the only thing out there.....ask around.. Also I am yet to take the exam....am still working on it ..this is the way I am trying to go about it for now....not going to turn back/ search for other options....lets see how things go..... maybe the others who have taken the Step 1 can clarify too!
