Hi everybody I'm an IMG who graduated in 2000 and I'm really confused & worried about the rate of success for a person like me in matching. Some say that there is a very little (maybe NO) hope for IMGs who are graduated more than 5 years ago to be matched but the others say that even more than this gap can be accepted in case of getting good scores in USMLE. Can anyone here clarify this subject without giving false hope, please? In case of failure in Match, how will be the situation to enter research field instead of clinical work for this group of IMGs?(I personally prefer this to deal with patients) Thx in advance

Hi Avesta, Your Q is vague and the answer will also have to be vague- Its like asking do people with low scores have a chance- Yes and no- The answer to both depends on the rest of your application- low scores, lack of clinical experience , etc are negative points and so no program is going to take because of these But rather because of what else you have in your application- some kind of outstanding experience that may/not be directly related to medicine- eg won an Olympic medal, have 10 papers, etc. For lesser mortals like me, I wouldnt be in this situation if I could do things like that. So it comes down to 1)get good scores 2) get USCE, 3) impress attendings - be proactive 3)get good USLoRs- which depends on the last 2, the best case ad safest bet would be if they are impressed enough with you that they will go the extra length and call programs for you/ take you in their own program- All seems unlikely but its possible- the bottom line is to think like a PD- Why should they call you instead of a fresh young graduate???- There could be lots of reasons- and so there is hope But is it false hope??Donno , thats at least all I have to offer and that i am clinging to! (I graduated 5 years ago ) Take some time to think about how much you are willing to give and what IT will Take Lots of time and $$$$$ - you cannot afford to do it half heartedly Once you are sure- set your goals, make a plan, and hope for the best Best of luck- you will need it!!

Also, when applying make sure to check with the program, check their web sites about their criteria for graduation year. So programs do have graduation year cut-off, where some don't. This will save you money, and hopes, as well. Also, as stated above, other items in your application that stand out, and what you have done since graduation are important components. There are people in this forum who are even older grads, but still keeping the fingers crossed with the same concern, like myself
