Hello, I am a Foreign Med Student. I took step 1 and preparing for step 2. I know that residency programs start at June. So i am very concerned about some documents and deadlines and id really appreciate it if anyone answer my questions:

1. Will i be able to catch the 2009 Match knowing that i will graduate on January and my Diploma certificate will be released on May or June?

2. Can I get my MSPE (Medical School Performance Evaluation) before graduating and whats the deadline by which it has to be sent?

3. What is the date by which i should have both step 2 CK and CS if i want to join a residency on 2009?

1. You have to graduate medical school and have paperwork done for your ECFMG certificate so that you can get your visa and licenses. If it's May or June, you run the risk of starting late (and programs don't have to hold your spot although some will) and finishing late. If you finish late and want a fellowship - your fellowship is then affected.

2. Only if your school will do an MSPE prior to your graduation. That's up to your school.

3. You should have your steps completed and ECFMG certification by November 2008 to start in July 2009.

Well said dear bbb...

I just wanted to add that if you mean that you will graduate on January of 2008 and you will get your diploma on June or May of the same year you'll be in great shape for 2009 match... if by the other hand you meant 2009... not so good at all!!

Even if you were graduating on the summer of 2008 you would do great because that is actually my case (graduated at the end of July of this year, applied this september and got my ECFMG certificate this month)... as long as you get the certificate before the ROL and match time you'll be able to pull if off. On the other hand if you don't have the ECFMG certificate by that time you will not be able to enter then match even if you had IV's and your only chance would be the scramble or post-match positions.

I meant i will graduate on January 2009 and i wanted to match the same year but my final diploma will go out on May or so..considering im done with all USMLE steps before ROL..what u think?

I thought many programs dont require u to be ECFMG certified by the time u apply.
What if im ranked by some program and im not certified yet by ROL deadline but i will be certified before residency starts? will they keep my position?

In that case you will not be able to enter the match. If you are not certified by that time you will be kicked out of it and programs will not rank you or if they rank you you will not be able to enter the match. Your only chance is the scramble but it is super difficult to get a position being an IMG and a lot harder w/o ECFMG certificate.

You also have to consider that once you get your medical diploma (which you could get as late as june) it takes at least 2 months for the certification process (AT LEAST!) in which case you will not be ready for residency... so by all means your case is difficult and I would consider waiting for 2010 otherwise you might endup not getting a position and expending a lot of money in the process or getting a position you are not happy with.

GL and keep us posted.

If you need visa it gets even more complicated...
