Confounding is when there is more than 1 factor that is responsible for the outcome, that is we have the outcome which is fine with us but this outcome is also due to some other factors ( SAY SOME OTHER HIDDEN FACTORS), BUT EVEN WITH THIS HIDDEN FACTOR, OUTCOME WILL BE SAME
and
effect modification is when we have the outcome but this outcome can be CHANGED with some other FACTOR( effect )

CONFOUNDING is a type of bias.......it alters the result of study been undertaken....the factor being examined is linked with another factor which is known as confounding factor..........

EFFECT Modificatuion .......is not a bias..........it is a factor modifying the effect..... one cant do anything about it.

ACTUALLY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO IS VERY NARROW...

AT SOME PLACES CONFOUNDING IS ALSO TAKEN AS AN EFFECT MODIFICATION

FOR THE PURPOSE OF USMLE

JUST REMEMBER THIS:

IF THE FACTOR/EFFECT IS ALREADY TOLD IN THE QUESTION AND IS BEING CONSIDERED IN THE STUDY THEN ITS EFFECT MODIFICATION

IF ITS NOT CONSIDERED IN THE STUDY AND ITS AFFECTING THE RESULTS.. ITS CONFOUNDING FACTOR

BETTER NOT GET INTO THE LOGICAL EXPLANATION OF BOTH...

i hope this explanantion works in my exam.....grin

So, if we know the extra factor, this is an EFFERCT MOTIFICATION (and not a bias).
If we do not know exactly (just guess if the extra factors there = ALWAYS something there that we do not know) – CONFOUNDING (bias and need to do something).

SmokyWaters, Are you sure??
