Program Name: Mercer University School of Medicine Date of Interview: Nov 15th Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Residence Inn at Marriot. The program puts you up in the hotel for 1 night. You get a shuttle from the airport (about 1.5 hrs) to the hotel. The hotel is pretty nice, you get a studio room with a kitchen and "living room". There is a HAPPY HOUR from 5-7 with free food and beer in the hotel lobby. The night before the interview you go to a dinner with 2 other residents and they tell you about the program. Level of "stress" (0-10): 1 How many interviewers: 3 How many applicants: 3 cat (including me) Tour included visits to: Basically the interview starts with a early breakfast with the PC. Then off to morning report. Then a PowerPoint slide show by the PD, followed by interviews with the PD and assistant PDs. Then off to a tour of the hospital...resident rooms, ICUs (there are 8 different ones), library, and basically any other place you want to go to. Finally there is noon conference with delicious drug rep lunch and a tour of the city. Questions asked: PD asks standard stuff: "where you are from", "where you live", "tell me about your clinical experience", "memorable patients"...etc. The assistant PD also asks the standard stuff: "why you want to come here", "strengths/weaknesses"...etc. happy residents: yes / no / ? : i have never seen residents that were happier... not a single person had anything bad to say about the program, even after we asked them of "any negative things that they can think of" research oriented: yes / no / ? yeah prematch offers? i forgot to ask visa sponsored? i didnt need one so i also didnt ask, but I think J1 City: Macon, Georgia. Small city, has all the needed stuff. There is Mercer University there, with a Law school, undergrad program, and the medical school. 1.5 hrs away from Atlanta, 3 hrs from Savahna, and 5 hrs from Daytona beach. One thing though is that the people there were super friendly. What I liked the most: Laid back atmosphere, "family program", great PD that really cares about the residents. Fellowships are apparently not hard to get (however, most are in the south). After this year it will have the most beds on the east coast, as they are building a 700 bed cardiac center. What could be improved: only thing is that the city is kinda small, thats about it Rate experience (0-10): 8 Conclusion: i was pretty impressed with the program and would probably rank it top 5
