1. umdnj made sure i knew i was rejected by sending me another rejection letter.

2.99/95 with 2 years us clinical experince
though i would be competitive for im but only 11 IVs even though i applied to 34 programs.
bottom line is this years match is very competetive.

Is there any way to check your theory on the over lapping /

P.S. where do you people find the money yo apply and interview all over the us

  #77

no way to check obviously..or else the matter wouldnt be shrouded in so much mystery..its what i have been observing so far...if i didnt hear from good university programs with 99/99 and a previous residency and a Masters here, it means that programs have got lot of applications better than mine and they have send interviews to them..if the program has 300 applications with good scores, tons of research and publications, outstanding US LORS etc..i wouldnt get invited there, even though i may be qualified at number 301 from a pool of applications that is 10,000 strong..bottom line is there needs to be only 300 people more qualified than u for u to get rejected, and if that 300 applied everywhere and i am sure they did..i mean even a superqualified guy would apply to atleast 50 programs..so assuming that 300 applied everywhere..automatically ur rejected from the top 50 programs...now it comes to middle tier programs..suppose the 300 did not apply there, but then the next 300 take their place..so there is another pool for middle tier programs..and overlapping happens when everybody applies everywhere..top applicants havent restricted themselves to top programs...average applicant havent restricted themselves to one faculty like internal medicine..i mean everywhere i go, people say they have recieved record number of applications..they all cant be lying..the programs have unprecented luxury this year and are picking out the best..this obviously happens every year..the only difference this year is "every"program has that luxury..my question is that, suppose there are 2000 internal medicine positions and if only 1500 guys are going everywhere, isnt that auguring a wild match/post match..another important point is that because one pool is getting interviews in line of 20-25 or more in case of guys like mph..that pool obviously feels very comfortable going into match rather than prematch(i for one, may definetely go into match unless a good prematch comes along)..thus cancellations is not really something i am betting on..anyways..to cut it short..time will tell..good luck

as far as the money goes..i wouldnt mind(and i guess nobody would)spending 5000 bucks..not spending money would make me lament later..when i started applying this year, initially i thought to apply to 70 programs and then thought"what the heck, just for the sake of 1500 bucks, should i take the risk????"and ended up applying to more than 100(for me that's awise decision, for most of my interviews are from programs that were NOT THERE in my initial list..the same line of thought motivates me to attend as many as i can..i mean i could cancel my 5 interviews and end up not matching anywhere and then repent the fact that for saving 2000 bucks i let go of an opportunity...if u are the kind of guy that has made up his mind Good program only>good fellowship only..u can afford that..but all i am looking for is a Residency spot period..and attending as many interviews as i can exponentially increases my chances of getting that spot and vice-versa..

What you said gingko it's true- I don't think the no of applicants increased with 25%. But the people applied this year in more places which could mean , on the other hand, more spots for scramble. Because if somebody goes to 20 ivs , because he/she has very good credentials, some programs will rank him/her high but he can attend just 1 position...
Actually top university programs don't interview too many candidates; look up on Frieda for MGH - last year for 65 position they conducted 400 interviews!
Why? Because they don't have to spend time and money to bring there the best candidates and to make a long list just to be sure they will not go in scramble.

  #80

as you said,,scramble is going to be busy..but it is equally unpredictable..from what i have heard..most of the programs fill those spots with someone they know...if guy A has a connection with a program, the program asks him/her to wait for scramble and then selects him/her..i hope somebody can validate/invalidate this..because scramble is not an open, merit based system, it leaves a lot to extraneous influences.. i cant believe this.. A COMPETETIVE SCRAMBLE..god...people i know had 25 interviews 2 years back with 88/88/CS fail once(yes, fail..)i have started ranting and hyperventilating now..where is my paper bag???

IV from Howard University Hospital

So, guys, don't give up, there is still hope...

I think it is getting more competitive because medical schools are putting more graduates these year into the pool.... AMGs said at interviews that their class is larger than the previous one, and that it seems that a lot of medical schools increased the number of students because of the shortage of doctors in US..(about 10-20%). Also there's always applicants from last match (more than 50% did not match last year..and it is increasing year by year...So it's true it will be more and more competitive..
I believe that around 2001-2002 it stopped a little bit because of 9/11, but has been increasing in the last three years...
scramble....maybe 50-100 positions? ....they will be filled first by AMGs that did not match (deans know before we do about applicants that did not match, and then by people with no visa issues)..anyways too few positions too believe it is a good option... (possible but not probable)...
so, regardless of pools...there's too many applicants for the number of positions..., so, the more programs you rank better chances as ginko said... and of course there's always a safe bet...prematch...and relax, have a beer and enjoy... vs. wait and go for the match...like going to Las Vegas with 5 dollars...

  #85

prematch>relax>beer>enjoy...hope i can do that in the next coupla months or else its gonna be beer>beer>beer>hematemesis(NE stay around buddy..soon you will need to upload more than paper bags) congrats imax..

  #89

Congrats stroke! I also received a northwestern rejection... funny thing is I did not even remember that I have applied there so I just laughed about it! grin.... anyways I completely agree with prueba... all the AMG's that I talked to told me that their classes had been larger each year... a girl from George Wshington told me they were 150 in her class!!! wow that is huge! and she told me that many schools were doing this...and the sad part is that all this people or most of them are out there wanting a residency spot as bad as we are...and who are the programs going to give a priority? I think it is perfectly understandable... what a way to send many of us away for good!!confused

Wow congrats,

Let's see how many IMGs at Bayview. Please write your IV experience at Bayview.

I am the only IMG who attended an IV at Santa Clara Valley hospital, affiliated with Stanford. All applicants are from top US universities. I think they will rank me lowly.
