we say that we alkalanize urine to prevent formation of a basis stone lke cysteine,to keep in dissolved form
but what then explanation of alkalization of urine in salicylate metabolic acidosis, and in resp alkalosis at high altitud.........

confused

I dun get it but what I got let me explain

we alkalinize urine so to excrete salicylates.. as salisylic acid is present in IONIC form that cant be absorbed and will be passed in urine

but in case of cysteine...cysteine cant be reabsorbed in acidic pH...we want it to get REABSORBED...rather than staying in the tubules to get deposited and form a STONE...so we dont wnt to excrete it more..we want it to get reabsorbed..

so as its basic..its more soluble in basic pH....

please review the concepts again

hope it helps

hey its simple, just remind urself of weak acid in acidic/basic medium and likewise weak base in basic or acidic medium.there lies the answer to all such question i.e S/acid poisioning etc.
