Scinerio: I have had 3 IVs so far and they "all" asked "if I am interested in prematch offer" at the end of the IVs? Questions; 1. If they ask your opinion about prematch, does that mean the program is interested in offering a prematch potision or is this simply a "generic" question that every candidate receives and just to fill out the IV questioneer? Anyone got the same question during interview? 2. If these PDs call (Which, they stated, may happen within 1-2 weeks) and offer a prematch, what should be a politically good answer to avoid the prematch, but still keep chances to be ranked during the match? Thank you for your reply.

1. It could be either way. If u r interested in that program too, move along to ask prematch chance. 2. Just tell them u just started iv and cant decide as u need to go to more places, AND, when it comes close to match time, mail them you've iv in different places and still think they r ur No.1 choice and ask for prematch (Impossible now as they ve already released the match quota to NRMP) to imply them how much u wanna come. They ll probably rank u very high bcz ur interest.

The problem is that alot of programs that do give out prematch often fill up alot and sometimes most of their spots thru prematch. This leaves few spots available for match. And often Ive heard that if you refuse the prematch then the chances of them ranking you high are slim because they already know that you arent that highly interested in them as a program. If you decide to go to match then its good to know which programs dont give out prematch as all their spots will be available for match. You can check out the nrmp site to get an idea of the spots available last year for match. If a program is known to have 15 spaces available for PGY1 but the nrmp site has list only 3 spots for match, then you know that 12 of their spots were given out in prematch. Take these factors into consideration which deciding whether to take a prematch offer or to go for match.

They should abolish prematch system. It's not a fair game anymore.
