Mostly the Nasal decongestants are alpha receptors agonist which block the blood flow to the mucosa, with prolonged vasoconstriction the loses its effect that and there is vasodilation which can be due to tissue hypoxia or drug metabolism at the receptor. Me 2 cents.

Nasal decongestants (sympathomimetics) act on alpha 1 receptors and cause VC .... I ask why with prolonged use of nasal decongestants occur rebound congestion ... I want alot of Clarification please thanks again ...

tolerance or tachyphylaxis? when I usd to read in my 3rd year our teacher told us that its because pseudoephedrine depletes all the neurotransmittter plus it also increases the no. of receptors... after removing the drug effect...there is MORE PRODUCTION as welll as MORE EFFECT...

rebound is because the alpha agonists are overcame by the production machinery of the cell
