If your baby is over 2 years of age then you will have to buy a full ticket for him.
Babies under 2 are allowed to travel on lap or if there is a seat available they let you use the carseat.
Options for the carseat,
Check in and get it at the airport.
Or hand it over to the flight attendant inside the plane and get it back when you land
In some states, the car seat rule does'nt apply to public transportation ( that includes taxis)
There are places where you can rent car seats.
If your baby's weight permits then you could just take his/her INFANT carseat , without the BASE. this will make it lighter. The seat belt can be threaded over the seat.
Other tips,
Take only one hand bag. A back pack is the best, both your hands will be free.
Take lots of dry snacks, baby wipes, NEW toys, Pull ups ( easier to manage than diapers ,plus the toilet in the planes are very very tiny ,but you do have a choice of a changing table.
The last time I travelled , they had restrictions for liquids. But you are allowed to buy water and other liquids after the check-in.( remember to buy liquids at room temperature

)
Single feed formula pouches are easy to manage. or you can buy milk at any food store at the airport, and request the milk to be warmed( everyone has a microwave)
Always have an extra set of clothes for the baby and yourself.
Let the baby sip on some liquid during take off and landing( their ears hurt more than ours) Some parents give tylenol before the flight. some Use benedryl for international or long trips.
Hope this helps.
