Not officially. By law, you are not allowed to touch patients. But if you are lucky, the staff may permit you to do it and even write the notes. But you can't mention it to anyone, because it may cause trouble. If you are unlucky, some jerk intern will make you go back and forth carrying the patients charts to the nurses, while the good stuff is being discussed during rounds and you'll miss the learning experience. People can be very nice and take you here and there in the hospital, tell you what they'll do next, ask for inputs and test your knowledge. Or they may simply go ahead with their duties, each one going in one direction, and leave you alone in the middle of the hall, not knowing which one you should follow. I've seen both happening. I hope you'll find a good one and meet goodwilling people. Anyway, even the worst is better than not doing it.

wink

normally an observership means you won't..you'll just be observing. however, if you manage to find an externship, then yes, you will be allowed to examine patients to a certain extent and take active part in discussions, etc.

Arlete is correct you are not allowed to touch the patient, just observe some other doctor to do this I did an observership and my letter was depressing it said I was prompt courteous and asked appropriate questions but that is all it could say you know because we don't do anything
