A 27-year-old male presents with painful lymphadenopathy and fevers for 1 week. On
questioning, the patient reports that he has a 6-month-old kitten at home. Physical examination
reveals a temperature of 37.9°C (100.3°F). There are multiple 3- to 5-cm enlarged tender
lymph nodes in the right anterior cervical chain. Multiple scratches are noted on the patient's
forearms in various stages of healing. You suspect cat-scratch disease. What is the best way to
make the diagnosis?

A. Blood cultures for Bartonella henselae
B. Blood cultures for Afipia felis
C. Serologic tests for B. henselae
D. Demonstration of small gram-negative rods on Giemsa stain of lymph node biopsy
E. Polymerase chain reaction performed on tissue from lymph node biopsy.
