I think every program has the own rule regarding the years after medical school! I would't be too worried - I think it is just what a PD wants for his program!

there is no arbitary rule, but same thing was told to me by another pd in community program. I had graduated 7 years ago but had a phd from us, so he entertained my application. According to him his cut off was 2001 for this match. He winked his eye while telling that. Albeit, program website does not mention anything of that sort.

Every program has its own cut off or some have NO cut off... This is one of the things you should ask the programs when you are doing your research and before you apply. If you find a program you like and they say they have a cut off of lets say 5 years and you graduated 6 years ago, ask them if their cut off is a preference or a requirement, and if they just won't look at an application with someone who graduated 6 years ago, or will they look at the whole package. I don't think its worth spending time and energy applying to a program who won't even look at your application... Some programs have screening procedures and certain applications don't even make it to the program director's desk because they get weeded out according to their own criteria. -For example one program I called and asked their minimum scores, the lady told me they are ONLY looking at scores of 95/95 on both steps, and if you don't have that, don't bother applying... Other programs may be this strict with graduation dates... you have to see the website or call to ask them directly.

i was at programs online last night and i cam across Univ. of Florida internal medicine program... this was the first time i saw something like this.........it read........ IMG's do not apply unless you scored 250 or above on step 2. otherwise ur application will not be considered. lol... why dont they just write...... We prefer you not to be an IMG! even if u did score that ull prob just get interview and bye bye just so program can look 'politically correct! i understand competition but this is ridiculous! aggggggggggg!

One program DID tell me straight up "We DO NOT accept IMGs" Isn't that discrimination? Or are they allowed to if they are a private hospital? I don't know how the laws work on this type of thing.

I don't know how the laws work on this type of thing. this is true it is discrimination, there are several programmes which offer J1 visa but at the same time their requirements r huge........they want 6 months to 1 year of clinical experience in usa , very high scores or things which are not possible for a poor IMG to do in usa without a visa. Its better that they should clearly say 'we dont want IMGs'

To be honest, I do not regard this as discrimination... Every program has it's inherited right to set up it's own rules, and that's it. Poor IMG/from poor country aren't the reasons to take an obligation to review 1000+ application for <10 positions... Nobody forces us to apply to them except our own will, so why then they should be forced by unexpected circumstances to review thousands of application, against their will? In fact, they give us a chance to save some money to apply to a more "loose" program... Stones thrown at me are welcome...

As for the 5-year cut off, I don't think this will ever happen... Many programs officially state that they accept only fresh graduates, so what's the need to re-enforce this? And even if this happens, this should start from ECFMG which will stop processing USMLE exam applications from those how will be "old" (like me, a 1998-graduate) according to new rules...
