An asymptomatic 50 yr old male patient presents to your office for his yearly routine exam. Physical exam reveals his BP to be 170/100 mmHg. The patient does not have a history of hypertension nor does he have any other significant past medical history. What treatment should be initiated at this time?

  #4

correct you need 2 more measurements, then assess which classification he falls under, and then treat accordingly.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Elevation of BP for the first time have to be double/triple checked if there is no sign and symptoms of end organ damage.

Once confirmed,
Start with 2 drugs if BP> 160/110.
Start with 1 drug if DBP>100.
Otherwise, life style modification and if DBP still> 90 after 3-6 months, start with 1 drug.

Initial drug of choice is usually thiazide diuretics.
