how does alkalinizing urine prevent formation of cystine stones (that are basic)? wouldn't a base in higher pH become neutral? i thought ions would dissolve better and prevent stone formation....what am i missing here? thanks.

U r essentially missing nothing. By Alkanization u r trying to dissolve or keep soluble an ion which will precipitate in an acidic envoirnment. As long as it remains soluble it wont form a stone and with hydration will exit in the urine but if the envoirnment becomes acidic then it will therefore precipitate.
