no, no uworld yet
sad

i will postpone the date if needed , maybe 10 april so that i get a month's time for uworld

i have to skim through neuroanat and few chapters of goljan that will take 2 more days , with remaining kaplan q's. i am bored of doing q's, so taking 2 days break from q's

and then just revise some things i always make mistakes in, from first aid/kaplan books .. that will take me about a day that is 9th
and nbme-4 on 10th.
i am taking all 4 nbme 's just don't want to take chances with this first step , if i don't do well in this , the rest of it will stumble too

will get back with my progress .. i will need help from you at that point of time .

thanks for your help so far, i was almost losing hope , but your journal and advice made me spring back to action , i am studying in a day's time what i was not studying even in a week last month .
thanks smiling face

May God bless you with all that you want in life .

hi genbot

this is what i planned

read a particular system in physiology and then goljan..pathology... same syastem followed by first aid followed by questions...

i have already given reading to these subjects individually because they ask lot of questions in pathophysiology i thought of doing this way...am i correct or any changes needed please do suggest

thank you.....

Guyton,
I think more than the number of readings its the kinda thought you put into your learning which is important. There are generally three kinds of questions you face. One is questions which test your basic factual knowledge, something you cannot afford to forget! Two, and equally important, is questions which test indepth understanding of material you learn. Mind you this is not the same as learning obscure facts but instead an ability to synthesize bits of information you learn into a continuum i.e form as many connections as you possibly can. Third, and relatively less important, is questions which test unusual info. Gettin even half of that stuff right should be good enough for a great score. If you can identify any of these aspects which seem to be missing from your prep at this time and then get to work on them regularly i think your scores should definitely improve. As i've mentioned often its very important for us to be able to identify our weak areas and then make sure we improve them as much and as soon as possible. That effectively determines the number of readings you require and the way you need to go about it. I dont think there is one single formula to success. We all need to adapt our preps to our needs (which i think are unique to each individual), and of course to the needs of the exam (which is a common denominator for all of us!).smiling face

very well said GB , what u read , how u read to v well is more important then how many times u read with not to miss all common books, qs, things most of us do .wink

GL in ur score , am sure u will break one more record high again nod
& do visist us even after ur in st 3 land .wink

Tia,
I feel combining patho and physio is a good idea. Stick to it. They do ask a lot of questions on pathophysiology. Yup.
About IgA deficiency...from what i know immunoglobulins are relatively ineffective because they mostly contain IgG and also expose the recepient to a high risk of anaphylaxis (patients have antibodies against IgA).

milee,
I'm chillin out these days. No serious work for now.smiling face Have my cs comin up in may, so will need to get my prep started sometime late this month. Till then i've to complete paperwork for the visa, which is a real pain in the neck. I'm also hopin to take step3 when i finish with cs this year. You must be takin your nbme tomorrow...goodluck!smiling face

shwe,
I will continue to visit this place whatever land i'm in.smiling face

mjbapana,
I feel its best you use HY histo. Kaplan's sure gotta lot of stuff missin.

Hello friends,

Here then is my exam day experience…

Perhaps I should’ve posted this in the exam exp forum but I’m reserving that for the post result period.

The day started for me unusually early. I’m used to getting up pretty late but this was no day for that.

I reached the prometric centre an hour early! That’s how eager I was to take the exam and get it over and done with!grin

Ma baby n me were takin the exam the same day so it was fun starting out early with she by my side.smiling face She gets kinda anxious quite quickly but she managed to stay calm despite not having slept a lot the previous night. I’d slept like a man with no worries (courtesy zolpidem).

I had the FA with me but somehow I never felt like opening the book before I went in. Despite trying to keep the atmosphere light hearted some degree of nervousness was inevitable and so it happened. But I wasn’t trembling, just a lil racin of the heart stuff…

One thing I was a lil unsure about was the way I was going to utilize my break time. I decided to go with how I’d feel when I’d be sitting there takin the exam.

The first question was stuff I knew, so felt it was a good beginning. But then I kinda got stuck on the second question. I could see no plausible answer. I’m thinking, ‘man this exam’s goin to be tough or maybe they got me started on an experimental Q!’ Anyways I opted for a pretty weird option and decided to get a move on.

Next up were some fairly straightforward questions. That got me a lil relaxed. But soon there was a trail of ethics questions. Had never seen that stuff before! Anyways I guessed and moved on.

At the end of the first block I was feelin pretty fresh so decided to carry on and do another block.
The questions were pretty doable except again for a coupla ethics Qs. I was like, ‘man they’r planning to murder me with this unheard of ethics stuff!’ Had no option but to take wild guesses. Which I did!

While I’m doin the second block my mind started wandering over to the previous block, in particular Q no.2. And I realize suddenly I made a stupid mistake. ‘The answer was so damn obvious how could I not see it!’. So I’m startin to get a lil upset with myself. In the meantime I’m faced with an EM pic which I seem to have no idea how to answer. After a lot of creative thinking which led me nowhere I decide to answer the only thing I seem to recognize in the pic!
The rest of the block goes ok. Two blocks done I decide to take a break and as soon as I click on the ‘take a break’ option I discover the answer to the EM pic! But its too late by then. And as I go out to take the break I’m fuming…I’m way too angry with myself.mad ‘oh if I could undo a coupla options!’.shaking headdisapproval
There in that break time I decided that no matter what I’m going to stick to the common sense approach, no more over thinking, no more trying to be creative with my answers. I was only going to answer stuff I’d seen before, stuff I was familiar with. They might try their best to confuse me but I wasn’t going to let that happen! Not again, never again!nodnod

This was a short break I took, maybe just 5 to 7 mins. Mainly because I really wanted to be there doin questions and doin them right! And I was angry with myself. Angry with trying to be too cute with my answers. I decided I’d either know the answers or I wouldn’t. And if I didn’t I’d only answer options I’d come across, not ones which seemed fancy and stuff, which were basically designed to lure me into mistakes. I’d had enough of that!nod

The third block felt really good, somehow all the anger had really cleared my mind and I was really zoning in now. And thankfully they dint have many ethics questions in this block. That helped a lot.smiling face
Now that I was feeling pretty good about myself, and feeling mentally fresh I decided to go on and do another block. Again it went well. But towards the end I could feel some mental fatigue creeping in. So at the end of this block I decided to take a longish break and give my neurons a well deserved rest. Because I was saving plenty of time on each block I took a 30 min break.
Had something to eat and just plain relaxed.

Thereafter things went pretty smooth. No major hiccups. Once in a while I’d be faced with pretty much unanswerable questions which had no real answers (probably some of them were experimental Qs which don’t count anyways!). I’d use my common sense approach, move on, and not worry much about them later on. This worked well for me because when I went in I somehow had the feeling that I need to get every question right which kinda fuzzed up my thought processes, but once I realized that there were goin to be questions which I’d have no clue about my mind really started buzzin with the right kinda activity, and as I found out later I even got some of these unanswerables right! That is the advantage of getting ur brain in order before u set out to do questions. It really is very very important.nod

Towards the end of each block from here on I started to fatigue a little bit. But what helped out was that I finished each block really quickly which allowed me to take long breaks. I took half an hour breaks each after block 5 & 6 and probably had 13 minutes of break time unused when I finished with block no. 7. i.e the last block! I utilized some of this time to answer the questionnaire they have at the end. This done I calmy got up, came out of the exam room, completed all the formalities and went out feeling relaxed and happy bout my effort. I then decided to wait for my baby, for her to finish her step2. In another 5 minutes I saw her coming out smiling ( the most beautiful smile in the worldsmiling face). She’d finished her thing an hour early! Man she’s awesome! And thankfully despite the lack of sleep she’d done well. I was so happy for her.smiling facesmiling facenod
And we went out together hand in hand feeling beautiful, happy and hopin as always for the best!smiling facesmiling facesmiling face

Now for some other important info u might want…
Pathology, pharmacology and physiology was pretty heavily tested. Micro also showed up in a decent number of questions. Biochem and genetics showed up in lesser numbers but that stuff was pretty tough. I dint see much of immuno. Histology, embryo and anatomy was relatively scarce and most of it was easy except for a couple of questions which I got wrong (one from histo, the EM thing, and another from embryo, which was a histo embryo combine). There was plenty of neuro though, had several of those cross sections. Thankfully I got em all right.
Had a few questions from behav. Science but not many. Had a few xrays and CTs too, but they were pretty straightforward. Not much trouble there.

What troubled me most were those ethics questions and what really got my goat were those silly mistakes I made initially. But apparently it all worked out in the end. Or so I hope.

I’d say around 60 to 70% questions were fairly straightforward, very much dependent upon ur memorizations skills, and stuff which is present on most prep materials (or atleast material I had used).10 to 20% Qs needed a lot of correlating, where u needed to work out a number of steps before u reached ur answer. 10% questions I guess need some distant recall, i.e u do not recall it from stuff u’ve read anytime recently but from somewhere in ur medschool days maybe. But if u got ur stuff right those days then most of such questions shouldn’t be a problem.
Some 10% questions had stuff which was almost bordering on ridiculous, so much so that I almost laughed at some. But then these questions they tell me probably are there for the sake of entertainment, or so I guess!grin
And yes, one more thing, they do test ur ability to integrate data. That is they sometimes test a number of subjects on the same question. But if u know each subject well and know the important connections then dealing with them should be easy.

Cant think of anything else at this time, I guess that’s it for now…

And of course if u have any questions I’m here to answer.smiling facesmiling face
