Hey guys, I need your advice....I was offered a pre-match from a program in NJ ...but they didn't give me a contract..instead gave me a letter few days after my interview in which it is clearly written that they are offering me the position..So my question is, is it wise to cancel my other interviews now or should I wait till I sign the contract which they said will be sending to me by late January or early February...I am really in a fix now... can't decide what to do...never thought a pre-match will put me in a situation like this..Does anyone know how valid is this offer letter?

The document seems valid... try maybe to ask the residents how they did last year...

tell them u dont feel comfortable if u dont see the contract in hand. Never ever withdraw before u really signed the contract. I know people get screwed before.

Thanks MPH and prueba for replies..I talked with the PC yesterday regarding the contract, but she said the contract will not be ready until after January...I was told by the PD that last year also they had given prematch to some residents, but I don't know who all are they and I don't have contact details of any of the residents there.....

If the PC says that it's what they give as a prematch, then it's valid. You have a prematch. Take it cancel your other interviews if it's what you want. Many programs don't have contracts ready for next year, it might have to go through legal, etc.

Thanks BBB for you reply... I have another question..suppose they get another candidate..let it be and AMG, with very good credentials and they want to take him at my place...so is there any chance that they will cancel the offer that they have sent me and take th AMG into the program ? If they do so, can it be taken as a match violation? I am asking this because I think giving and taking pre-match is against match rules...

pre match is only illegal for AMGs... IMGs (also AMG graduates, and AMGs from DO schools) are considered independent applicants and as such may accept prematches...

From what I know, once you get a prematch offer from a program then it stays. They can't wiggle out later if the candidate accepts it. And if you can see yourself doing a residency at that hospital then grab it... Good luck!

Progrms usually set aside a number of prematches (if they offer them). An AMG will NEVER be offered a prematch - they can't be. Offering you and you accepting a prematch is not against any of the rules. Unless you are an AMG.

Thanks BBB. You are a great help! Do you have to ask a program for a pre-match or they will offer you automatically should they deem you suitable?

AMGs can be offered a preatch as long as they arent MSIV students...that is, they're not graduating. So an AMG from 2005, 2006, 2002, etc can be offered a prematch

So an AMG from 2005, 2006, 2002, etc can be offered a prematch might be true, but how many AMGs do you know who have not matched in the years before and are desparate for pre-match? According to the official statistics 97-98% of AMG's match each year, the older AMGs are a very, very small percentage in the total of applicants. If you like the place and want to work there- take it.

May I complicate things a little? Say you accept this offer, how will you let them know? You reply the same way they presented you with the offer (letter or email, or verbally?). But in the same time you want to keep all your interviews (which is not illegal, although may not be considerate). What if another program offers you a prematch as well, and you like that program better. What consequences will you face if you go back to the first program and tell them you changed your mind? My point is the legality of the document in which the prematch is offered. Of course most programs would not offer prematch if they would not mean it, but in theory situations can be reversed and there is no legal back up here, I think. Is there a way to ask NRMP this question? Things happen even when it seems impossible to be changed. A few years ago USMLE (I think) announced that due to some computer error, some CS exam scores were misreported. In other words, some people who thought they passed were in fact annonced they didn't. Some of them were in residencies already and they were "expelled".

I know cadp, and this excatly is my concern.... regarding this program, this is one of my first choice programs...so I don't mind being in this program......but I am very skeptical about canceling the interviews because in case they turn me down I will not have any legal back up...I will not be even eligble to file a suit...or is it possible to sue them with this offer letter, instead of a contract..?
