Hi people , grin
I would like to know if someone could answer me this question.
When an img get his ECFMG then he has a license for Us.And then he can start looking for his specialisation. smiling face
What are his chances in getting the specialisation he wants (especially if it is surgery) ?
What things he can do to be a better candidate? Does he have to have high Usmle score?I've heard that Usmle score will not help you much , but if you have bad score and you are img then you are out of the game?
So if that is truth what can a little img do in big America with no one to help him?Does he have to have a lot of science reseaches behind him or to have good connections in major hospitals or ...what?
Best regards

Okay - answers:

1. When an img get his ECFMG then he has a license for Us. The ECFMG certification is not a license. It is proving that you have been to medical school, taken the examinations and are qualified according to the standards of the ECFMG. Many of the states have their own licensing requirements.

2. What are his chances in getting the specialisation he wants (especially if it is surgery) ? That lays entirely on you, my friend. There are IMG's in many surgery programs. The chances are based on your CV, your scores, your interview skills, your personality.

3. What things he can do to be a better candidate? Does he have to have high Usmle score? A high USMLE score will help you better than *just* passing score. Unfortunately, lower scores could just reflect a persons test taking ability rather than true knowledge base.

4. I've heard that Usmle score will not help you much , but if you have bad score and you are img then you are out of the game? Well, it's really hard to say that you are out of the game, but it might be safe to say that you might not get in to the institution of your top choice, you might have to bend that a bit.

5. So if that is truth what can a little img do in big America with no one to help him? Does he have to have a lot of science reseaches behind him or to have good connections in major hospitals or ...what? Study, study, study, get the best scores on your exams, study more, practice your interview techniques, and don't be someone that you aren't - it always shows through in the end.

Good luck!

hi , i was amazed with your reply about the scores & residency & u mentioned that an img should get a high score in order to get what he aims for.anyway i was wondering how high this score should be for both steps if i want to apply for general surgery??
you also mentioned that iwe have to work on our interview skills so is there any kind of source could help with that thing ?
i am looking froward for your reply .

Fabio - I am really sorry, but I don't know the answers for General Surgery. All my residency experience has been in Internal Medicine. About the best answer that I can say is to get the highest score that you can get, study hard.

Interview skills? I have a couple of items that I will post shortly that will help with interviewing skills. The things that I have learned have helped me in the past with negotiating what I needed.

You could also do an internet search for "interviewing techniques" which might bring up some information for you.

Take care.

bbb :At least how high your score should be on both steps to get in internal medicine program?

  #8

Again, get the best score that you can get, then you can think of any residency. Different programs have different requirements regarding scores, visas, etc. I have seen applicants with the lower scores get residencies, but the choice of where is more limited.

Good luck!

I think that an Img can find here all the informations he needs.
It would be nice if somedy explains things about visa that an Img needs to have for his residency

Losergirl (let's hope that refers to weight  ) - not having to obtain a visa will help you quite a bit - in the words of Martha Stewart "It's a good thing"

Anno - what kind of visa information do you need? Seeing that this is the time of year that I have my intern class just starting to arrive, I am pretty well versed in visas!

I know that there are two types of visas for an Img wanting to join residency program in Usa.J1 visa and H1B visa.
With j1 img is obligated to return to his country after completing his residency program. Is it possible to change J1 visa , during residency program , to the other tipe of visas or some other residency status ?
With H1b( if I am right) img has no obligations of returning.
What requirements should the img satisfy in order to obtain this visa ( I know that he has to have all three usmle test) ?
When does this visa expires?
Is it difficult to change this visa later to permanent resident status ?
How large are costs of issuing this visa for Img ?

Ahhhhh, visa questions! What I dread most during recruitment season!! :?

With j1 img is obligated to return to his country after completing his residency program. Is it possible to change J1 visa , during residency program , to the other tipe of visas or some other residency status ?

Not during your residency. Following training, include fellowship here, you will need to find an employer who will sponsor you for permanent residency or your green card (which are now pink). But it is following the training. You should start looking for the waiver position about half way through your training, giving about 18 months to 2 years to complete the paperwork process.

You are correct, with H1b, the visa holder has no obligation of returning to your home country. You still have to find an employer who will sponsor the change of the H1B to the green card - don't assume that it will the hospital that gives you the H visa. The hospital that I work for will sponsor an H1B visa, but will not sponsor to change it to permanent residency. Also, you should know that most fellowships will not sponsor an H1B visa - so if you want to subspecialize, you would be better off getting your J1 visa and looking for a waiver prior to finishing your fellowship.

What requirements should the img satisfy in order to obtain this visa ( I know that he has to have all three usmle test) ?
To obtain a H1B visa, you must have USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3. You must have current ECFMG certification. And you must have the training license for the state that you will be working in. And you must have all this in your hands prior to submitting a complete application.

When does this visa expires?
You can remain in H1B status for a maximum of six years.

Is it difficult to change this visa later to permanent resident status ?
Not if you find an employer willing to sponsor you.

How large are costs of issuing this visa for Img ?
The J1 visa will cost you about $130 dollars. This doesn't count the cost of the exams and the CSA. The H1B doesn't cost as much - but most programs will strongly encourage you to pay for the premium processing. And it does work. And, a little known fact, it is written into the rules of the H1B visa, that the employer must pay for the fees for this visa.

Is having close relatives as Us citizens the fact that will make your 'changing visa to green card process' a little bit easier ?

  #17

thanks for the info!!!

  #18

Hi all. sorry if im repeating stuff here...stiill new here =) Just aa few Qs for ya. Hope u can help me with this. Is a non us citizen/PR IMG disadvantaged in any way compared to local US grads in terms of residency placements or does it depend entirely on marks, interviews, CV etc?
Also, how hard is it to get a green card and when woould be the best time to do it?
thanks!!!!

Hello

Thankyou for all the advices,I'm a fmg currently in the US preparing for the exams. I have one q.
1. Is there any chance for a fmg like me to get into a residency programme in Johns hopkins hospital ,it's been a dream of mine to join there and I'm interesed in general surgery?

  #20

You'll have to do your homework and see if 1) Johns Hopkins takes IMGs in there residency program, and 2) if they take IMGs in General Surgery.

Check their FREIDA listings, and call the program. Find out their requirements.

Good luck

hello bbb......

i have 99 in step-1 and 99 in step-2...........
i have a green card too.........
however i m an img...............

though john hopkins and mayo and yale and whatever those cream stuff is called ......

all of them mention in their web-sites that they do take good imgs in their programs....

but when i went their and saw....i came to know the ground reality....

no imgs in john hopkins since last many years...and probably true for other those fancy stuff........

why is it so........

i come from a devoloping country....
i have seen that number of patients in my five years of clinical experience....that these americam "cramming" docs will not ever see in their entire life-time....

but still an img is treated as an orphan....a second class doc....however extraordinary he or she may be......

i do understand the reason for this unequality...in this land of equality for all......self-motivated political and conservative instincts.....

but it is a fact that there are many hospitals out there that don't even send interviews to imgs like me.....
and it's a fact.............

we have to satisfy with whatever we get and move ahead from there-off...
and the field is open from there......because in long run we can see that it's the img's and hardworking people...that succeed..........

Aside from the obvious - that life is unfair - I don't have an answer for your question.

There are many hospitals in the country that will jump through hoops for a highly qualified IMG such as yourself! (My program included!! )

Good luck!

Dear All

To tell you about me: I am an IMG from a first-world, English-speaking country. I came here to do research at a world-renowned cancer hospital. I have publications, 2 years of research, letters from some of the top surgeons in the US, and ECFMG certifacation. They are sponsoring me onto an H1B visa currently.

Three questions:
1) Does anyone know how hard surgery is going to be to get into?
2) Do I need Step III for an H1B since I will be applying for an intern post?
3) Is it hard to find a hospital who will employ a resident on an H1B (I beleive they forfeit govt funding for my salary if they do?)?

Thanks to anyone who can help...

  #25

Thanks a lot Mr. BBB for sharing your knowledge with us. I just want to clarify one thing. You mentioned following in your response about a visa question:
"if you want to subspecialize, you would be better off getting your J1 visa and looking for a waiver prior to finishing your fellowship".

Do you mean J1 is better for me if I want to go for subspecialization even if I am getting a H1 offer?

Thanks
