question for you all...

as an IMG, often we cannot get permanently licensed until we've done 3 years of residency. i've looked up the licensing rules, and AMGs often can get a permanent license after their intern year, and taking step 3. so we wait around while our AMG counterparts are moonlighting, but we cannot. there are a few states that will allow IMGs to get a permanent license after 2 years.

i believe Ohio is one of them. after reading through their licensing requirements, it says 2 years unless I'm reading it wrong. so we can moonlight our 3rd year of residency, right?

any other states you know of that only require 2 or less years?

check this link, has all the state requirements for licensure. There are some states which do not make a diffrenece between AMG and IMG, so it depends on where you'll start your residency...

Basically, most states will not allow IMGs to Moonlight. I went to an interview the other day, and NY State law does not allow it, since an IMG cannot be licensed until 3 years of training in a residency program. That goes for most states in the Northeast as well (CT, NJ, VT, NH, MA, RI).

Other states require 2 years for IMGs, so you wonr be able to moonlight until year 3 of residency.

And very rarely a state does not differentiate between IMG and AMGs, and allow both to moonlight after year 1.

In essence, 80-90% of us will NOT be able to moonlight during residency, so give up on that dream. And of course, you do need the Step 3 to have those rights.

Just adding my two cents,
one can not monlight on J1 anyway...its only possible with H1 visa and approval from hospital/ program director.. and question about malpractice insurance remains..

the reason i'm asking is because i am a US citizen, and i have 5 interviews in OH. this is a factor in choosing a residency, as I would be able to moonlight (in 4/5 programs) 3rd year in OH. that could potentially mean a lot more income.

C5a,

I completely agree with you! Moonlighting is great opportunityto get additional experience, improve income(which is much needed if you have a family...) and create connections. I knew several residents who couldn't moonlight at their hospitals but did so at outside facilities. some of them did not even share this with the program...they were afraid that this might violate the 80 hours/week rule, but they still did it. malpractice insurance is not an issue since you are still a resident, none of my friends had this concern- completely covered by the the hospital which needs your help.

Hi C5a! Some programs in PA do allow IMGs to moonlight even after first year.
