Until today I have attended 3 IV and in 2 of them I've been asked:
-How many programs have you applied?
-How many invitations do you have?
Shoud I tell them the truth, I applied to 83 programs?? Will they think I'm just fishing??

Such an illegal question....how did u reply?

I don't think it is right to ask something like this! Were are the confidentiality and the human's rights???

To tell you the truth I was surprised, I didn't want to say I applied to so many programs because I was insecure of getting a spot, and specially after I had just told them that I choose their program because it was very interesting and I liked the city, accepting that I applied to so many programs I thought at that moment would look like I was just fishing, so I told him I had applied to have of the programs I realy got and also half of the IV invites I have had .
I hope it was the right decision.
But in the future what should I do???

I don't know the answer to those questions...
I would say that I have IVs in this or that region....
I don't believe they'll conyinue asking that.... If they want to know specifically, I won't tell them that I'm fishing with dinamite..... just probably where I have been called.

This is a sign that a program is interested in u. So if u r interested in that too, go on to ask for a prematch.

  #7

that's an interesting thought. But hey man, you are a little bit biased because everybody will offer you a prematch....hehe...

They are asking that question to find out if you are truly interested in them or if you just randomly selected them in addition to 500 other places... Some people use programs as IV practice.. they have to make sure you are a real candidate and not wasting their time... just my thoughts.

Thank you guys for your responses.
In the first one, just like DrVirgo said, I felt the PD wanted to know if I was really interested in their program, thats why I didn't want to tell him that I applied to a lot of programs.
In the second IV, the one ho asked was a new faculty, ex chief resident, ho told me I reminded him when he applied, he advised me that if I was interested in a competitive fellowship I should be focused more on univ programs, then asked me how many invitations and from those how many were in univ programs and which ones, I was really confused with this guy becouse he seemed to ask me because he wanted to advice me, but I'm not sure.

I dont think they r this boring unless the programs u apply to r the lower tier ones. Every program I went to so far r really sure of themselves that all the applicants apply for them r bcz they r interested. But my case may be biased as most of my programs r very AMG-oriented tht seldom do IMG come.

Honesty may help both sides as u can find a program suits u most.

"How many programs?" isn't illegal

"What programs did you apply to?" is illegal.

It's just chit-chat, small talk. Testing English comprehension, etc.

Good answer? "Way to many - my parents think that they have become the National Bank of {enter name here}." Laugh about it.
