micro in FA is pretty damn good. The only thing I would supplement it with it is the explanations from UW

hi nadeem please listen to this advice as it can save you many hours if not days of work. FA for micro is more then enough! i used many different resources, to come back to the same conclusion. if you need to hellp paint a picture, use clinical micro made simple, just for it to explain how the person will present, and some fun mnemonics. but other then that FA is more then enough. i think kaplan was very unorganized, but their review section with the charts was definitley helpful, and i recommend you look at that. bacteria is something that i can spend days on it and still feel uncomfortable. give yourself a time limit, thats realistic, because, you can dwell into it for too long. remember viruses and the others are just as important. i never paid much credit to the intro pages of micro. where they describe various properties, ie iga protease, fermenters, etc. i realize now that,, if you can know those WELL,, then when you learn each indiv bacteria, you can list all those easly first, and all you have left is to know about 2 lines worth of clinicals , and one word for the treatment. and you are done. this can greatly speed up your learning process. and not look so intimidating. i didnt do it this way the first time i learnt it, and it felt a lot to digest and memorize, i never understood it. i was like okay this ferments that, this catalases , bla bla, and just htought ih ad a paragrpah to memorize per bacteria. and i would fail. but then i tried to learn the properties in the beginning pages of FIrst aid micro first. the properties made sense, i was able to learn which bacteria had it. and later, i didnt feel like i was memorizing anything, but just putting it together easily. so i definitley definitley recommend that. just learn the first few pagse. then put down a name of a bacteria, and write down if you learnt anything about it so far, if it had any of the properties mentioned. then just look it up in the pagse of micro, and you will notice you have 3/4 of the info down! also for viruses, it is KEY to understand their structure. ie, what has envelope, what is positive strand, what is nonsegmented, bla bla bla. i never thought this was important first, and i was like il learn that later. well let me tell you how wrong i was! first of all, most questions help you out by teling you the structure, which always elimitages a lot of choices and leaves you with 2 possibilities. plus ifyou know the structure, then uc an learn them by groups. you can tell yourself, work on baby steps.know the dna viruses first. then the rna viruses. it helps you paint a picture, and is less intimidating. micro is my worst topic by far, but these little recommendations im giving you, made me breeze by it in 2 days, of my second review. something i never thought was possible. i normally read something once, get :S and then say i will learn it later properly, . but that is wrong. esp with micro. ifyou dont get it, sit there, i write it out on a white board, and erase and rewrite it, again and again til i can write it without thinking. thennnnnnn i move on. if you continue to move on without really understanding it, it will mak eyou more nervous and frusterated. and the second time you come back to it, you have a bias built, and are like.. you know what i never learnt this, i never will. okay sorry i am going on and on. ijust feel so passionate about this, because i wasted so much time on my first review. i wish i had heard this advice before, iw ould have saved alot of time. also for micro pharm-i used mnemonics extensively. i made it make sense. ie-tetracycline, all of its side ffects, i think of it like coffee. it will give you teeth discolor, upset gi, phtophobia (becuase your eyes are being strained from staying up so late , coffee always stunts your growth, sometimes you just sheerly have to memorize the drug. but if you can paint a picture, you can work it out easily, and have less things to force into your memory! goodluck!!!! aluso lange micro cards were great for me, they have alittle too much info, but the clinical scenarios are very good to help me review. look at those if you have time, but, they are time consuming, and i suggest you look at them AFTER you read your micro from FA. using a chart to see how each thing relates to another, alaso really helped me.
