I have had this idea in my head for a while now as well... How do you suppose we could go about creating a union of residents?
Doc750 wrote: A better aproach to bring about change, would be to unionize the residents. Then everyone gets an equal say without having to be singled out as a trouble maker in your program.

Lets do it.. That way we can go on strike whenever we want to take a break. No one' gonna throw away 5-10,000 doctors together..

Guys, we are or ppl like we are making this situation. Let see, what would you rather be, a resident with 80 h/wk / 30K/y or not a resident? it is a market.

From that article : "The government spends about $11 billion annually on 100,000 medical residents, or roughly $110,000 per resident. " But let's forget about the money - the most important thing it's the fact you could be so tired that you become a robot, you can not be so alert for your patients, you can not study at much as you want. I worked , for almost 2 years, over 80h/w and I know what this means. Anyway, if you are going to the hospital, first thing to ask the physician is "For how long are you here?" because I don't think you want to be treated by a doctor who is there for more than 24hrs.

babydoc4usmle wrote: adding more residents mean putting more doctors on the market.... Not to mention less learning opportunities for the other residents. I understand where Doc750 is coming from. There is no doubt that the system screws over the residents; thats primarily one of the reasons why they passed the "80 hour work week" law in many places. However, there's a reason why we have the most efficient medical system in the world. The extensive training and educational regime that residents are put through makes them very qualified physicians whose medical opinion is accepted worldwide. Now, if residency programs were churninig out subpar doctors, then I would agree that the system needs some major refinement. But from what I hear, doctors are well equipped to enter the real world postgrad training, and therefore I dont think we're in any position to argue the system.
