could someone pls explain to me why we use --> cosyntropin for acute and ACTH levels for chronic adrenal insufficiency as the 1st initial Test??? tx

cosyntropin is synthetic subunit of corticotropin. use cosyntropin to differentiate primary from secondary adrenal insufficiency.
I don't know how long it will take to have increased ACTH when you have acute adrenal insufficiency. Maybe that's the reason to use cosyntropin instead of ACTH level??
