An advanced position is one that starts 1 year after the match. In these programs u can apply for 1yr prelim and for the advanced program together in the same match eg: for a 2009 neurology position u apply for 2008 prelim and 2009 Neurology programs together in the 2008 match. The deal is that u hv to get matched in both simultaneously. Hope this helps.
