You can't bypass it!! I called the Medical Board of California and they told me that they would not issue a PTAL without a SSN. They just told me to get one!! What a "polite" way to send all aliens away from their state!

Unfortunately, you're all right guys We cannot get a SS# with that letter from MBC!!!! PTAL is not a good reason to get that # AND... now what!?!?! After spending a bunch of $ and a ton of neurons....I'm so sad and frustrated!! Anyway, SSA clerk said to try to get a EAD from INS...did anyone try this way!?!?! Is it possible to get a EAD on H4 visa!?? Or I'll spend time and money again for nothing!? Any suggestions?! I just don't want to give up but it's harder and harder

^^Pardon the question, but what is an EAD? Can you get that on a B1 visa? We just came from the SSO, they did not give me a SS card since I am on a B1 visa. I was hoping to get an externship at Cedars Sinai here in CA, unfortunately the last few digits are required along with the CV.

EAD is a working permit given to a person, most of the time before he/she gets a residency (GC). So it is very difficult to get an EAD with B1 visa unless you have an employer which is nevertheless near impossible or getting immigration....

Thank you for that Glo MD. I would just like to clarify, do we need a PTAL for observership or externship in California?
