I am currently on H4, and not eligible for a social security number. But
PTAL requires a social security number.
Has anyone of the same situation got around and got the PTAL? Thank you very much.

I tried.....but SSN office denied my request...

thank you for replying. Then what did you do? Did you apply for PTAL without a SSN? I called Medical Board of California today, and every time I was directed to leave a message. Didn't even get a chance to talk to a person. So I sent them an email just now, still waiting for their reply.

When I started the process 8 months ago...I didn't know that SSN was required....Now all the other steps are complete but no SSN...SSN is last hiccup and no rounabout way...sad

Hi pals, I've just got an email from my licence analyst, and she told that will send me a letter to support my application for a SSN!
If your application for PTAL is complete beside SS#, they will give you a letter to get a SSN! Don't give up!

I took that letter to SSN office and was told that the mentioned cause in letter is not enough to get SSN....mad

Forget about PTAL if you don't have a SSN, it is sad but true, I've talked to everyone, just getting PTAL is not a reason to get a SSN they would not give it to you. shaking head

You can't bypass it!! I called the Medical Board of California and they told me that they would not issue a PTAL without a SSN. They just told me to get one!! disapproval What a "polite" way to send all aliens away from their state!

^^Did they at least offer you advise on how you could get a SSN?

Unfortunately, you're all right guys sad We cannot get a SS# with that letter from MBC!!!! PTAL is not a good reason to get that #
AND... now what!?!?! After spending a bunch of $ and a ton of neurons....I'm so sad and frustrated!!
Anyway, SSA clerk said to try to get a EAD from INS...did anyone try this way!?!?! Is it possible to get a EAD on H4 visa!?? Or I'll spend time and money again for nothing!?
Any suggestions?! I just don't want to give up but it's harder and hardersad

^^Pardon the question, but what is an EAD? Can you get that on a B1 visa?

We just came from the SSO, they did not give me a SS card since I am on a B1 visa. I was hoping to get an externship at Cedars Sinai here in CA, unfortunately the last few digits are required along with the CV.

EAD is a working permit given to a person, most of the time before he/she gets a residency (GC). So it is very difficult to get an EAD with B1 visa unless you have an employer which is nevertheless near impossible or getting immigration....

Thank you for that Glo MD.

I would just like to clarify, do we need a PTAL for observership or externship in California?
