Hey everyone,

I just thought I would post some advice as one of my friends failed his exam, and he believes it is because of his English. From what I notice, he speaks fine, but sometimes mixes up questions.

I have noticed a lot of foreign people know english great but mess up a bit in this way:

For example when asking a question they say:
"How you are feeling"-(WRONG) instead of "How are you feeling?" -(RIGHT)

Make sure you ask your questions in the history right.
For example say "When did the pain start?" NOT "When the pain started?"
or say "What do you do to make it better?" NOT "What you do to make it better?"

I think little things like this may make a difference in the fluency of english part.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

I believe that people at this age wont straiten up their accents till they start living, using, and practicing their English with natives on a daily basis.

praying4a99,

Its not a matter of accents. People from different countries WILL have accents and the boards understand that. Accents can evolve and change, but someone who comes to the US as an adult will NEVER have the same accent as a native born US Citizen or someone who came here at a very young age.

On this exam you are not penalized for having an accent, as long as the SP can comprehend what you are saying. Ofcourse if you mean to say "hold your breast" and instead because of your accent you say "hold your breath" then you may lose some points if the patient can't understand you and follow your instructions.

What I was talking about is phrasing and grammar; it's more about asking a question the right way and making it sound like a question, not a statement.

Im sorry my post wasnt clear enough.

What i meant was getting the "heck" of the language. We were all taught English at school but that is never enough.

To get the sense, the feeling, the taste, of any language you need to practice it with native speakers or at least with fluent speakers of it.

Oh, one more thing, we should never assume that we are good, fine, or OK at any new language. Please keep the judgment to the natives.

DrVirgo, I absolutelly agree with you and will use your rule on my up coming exam next monday. MY husband ( american born) told me the same and corrected my english the same way while we practiced.

that's an important part. and being able to effectively communicate is tested on the exam. and it is good that you are aware of those subtle differences. and being comfortable speaking in English will definitely help you. and the best thing is to practice speaking English whenever and with whoever you can.

good luck.

Totally Agree.

Its not only to understand the SP but also to make urself understood at the same time. Sometimes ppl think if the other person is gettting it or making sense of wht u r saying it doesnt matterbut essentially is shud and it does matter. Accents r not in question neither is pronounciation its the grammer usage by a person which shudnt be faulty.

Hints for language study:

1- Imitate fluent speakers as much as you can

2- Memorize vocabulary

3- Study the grammer

4- Study out load as much as you can

5- Study every day. When you are studying a new language you are embarking on a journey through an unknown wilderness. Study every day or you may lose your way.

No dought the most effective way to improve your foreign language skills is to use the language as often as you can.

DO NOT translate from your native language to English. Most of the time the structure of the phrases do not match.

I think its difficult to change ur english now....what can be changed is the clarity and speed....speak clearly and slowly.....they are looking for a sympathetic and understanding doctor...this is what should be the approach i think....read the q carefully...write the name ...write PAMHUGFOSS vertically...as well as...LIQORAAA.....confident knock on the door.....loud enough for them to hear u....good morning mr x....my name is dr y...very nice to see u hear......how can i help u today....or what brough u in today....look into there eyes when talking...in my exam i chose to stand....bcoz they are on the exam bed which is quite high...and if u chose to sit u will be at a low level....which i think isnt good....suppose patient says he is in lot of pain...than be sympathetic...and say..i m so sorry to hear that...i will give u pain relief...however i need to know whats seems to be the cause of it....for that i need to ask a couple of questions as well as examine u....is it ok.....thank you....i have posted rest of the stuff in another thread here.....i think if u r very sympathetic and use right sentences at right time.....even if ur english is not very good...it will be masked with ur good deeds..hope it helps...GL!
