Hi buddies,
I decided to be your mouse for an experiment!
I will enroll in 'GMC group' http://gmcgroup.org/ and let you know how this company is like.
Reasons I decided to do it are:

1. After I finished internship in my country last February, I've not been doing anything special except studying for USMLE, sleeping at home and shopping with my mom, began to feel bored and thought I got to do something.

2. While many people say negative things about this sort of companies, a lot of IMGs seem to get tempted by these companies and I believe it's largely due to difficulty getting a position for any kind of USCE and lack of direct feedback from people who actually tried these programs.

3. $$$$ is not a problem for me at the moment. My mom and I agreed that tuition of $ 7,794 for 24 weeks' rotation is not bad.

4. Any sort of experience in the US with any sort of USLOR would be better than nothing (I think?) and I am ready to pay them for the time and effort I'd be able to save trying to get into an office myself.

By the way, what GMC group claims to provide is not an externship. It says "...you will be officially enrolled in XUSOM as a visiting student, and be able to have your ROTATIONS scheduled in ..." and "...therefore you will function as a medical STUDENT in a supervised learning environment." and it specifies on its website that it is 'primarily complemented with OUTPATIENT rotations'.
I'm planning to participate in 2009 Match and I probably will start the rotations in Feb 2008.
Will let you guys and gals know how it turns out.

Peace.

hey have u given steps as yet?what do u think about imgprep?

  #3

mehvishalavi, I cleared step 1 and studying for step 2 now. Planning to give cs and step 3 during 'the rotations'.
I don't have any opinion about any company. I just followed the links on 'USMLE board readiness' site that I like to use for online resources.

Oh, sorry for not being so informative for a while friends....
It's because nothing's really going on..yes as RX 135 said, I'm planning to start it in feb, so I have just finished submitting documents required by the program.
There's not much feedback to provide right now but I can tell my impression to this group is not bad, so far.
The program coordinator is kind, helful and works quite fast.
That's it . wink
I WILL follow this post up more properly after I finish step 2 ck..it's killking me!

Those requesting friendship to share an apartment during the rotations; thanks, that'll be sweet, but my mom does not want me to share a room with a stranger. I'd rather stay alone.

My rotation will start on March 3rd.
At first, I wanted to start it on Feb 18th, a month before step 2 CS, because I thought it might be helpful for the exam, and the coordinator scheduled it for the date.
Then, later when I asked about details about the rotation, he informed me that my rotation had to be delayed until March 3rd due to 'Orientation' and because it will not be held until March 3rd and it is mandatory that I attend it before starting rotations.
Not very happy with it.
They do answer questions well but never provide the information BEFORE I ask about it.
When he scheduled my rotation the only thing I was told was the physician's last name. When I asked about the location, I was told it's going to be Atlanta medical center.
That's all I know at the moment. Will keep adding.

I started an IM rotation in Atlanta medical center (at an outpatient clinic) this week. As for now what I found out about this company is that it is not a scam at least. This company gets rotations to many caribbean med schools.
What is surprising for me is that carib med students do their CORE clerkships at outpatient clinics for only 4-5 hours/ day, 4 days/ week. Well, maybe it could be so only with this physician. I cannot be sure but anyway, back in my school it was mainly inpatient, 9-10 hours/ day, 5-6 days/ week.
So far I've never seen a graduate like me here..everyone else, carib med students.

I guess there could be no more updates to it. The most important information about this company, that everyone wanted to know, has been provided I guess? (that it's not a scam..)
And even though rotations are done only in an outpatient setting, we see patients doing histories and physicals, fill in the patients' chart, like we do in CS exams, present them to an attending, then we go back to the patients' room with the attending, and discuss plans. We also follow them to the wards but in an inpatient setting, we basically just observe..we are not allowed to write inpatients' progress notes.
That's it.

ps, mytime, anyone can apply if they can pay $..

Hi, neopulsar. Thanks for the info.

I want to confirm something regarding your last post. So, you do have patient contact in OPD setting, but you're observing in in-patient setting? Did I get that right?

Another qn, is this hospital ACGME-accredited? i.e. do they have a recognized residency training program? Or is it a regular hospital, but not a teaching one?]

Thanks.

Hey, Thank you for sharing all the info here.

You said you are enrolled as a 'medical student' , so is it not conflicting if they allow graduates to enroll into the program?raised eyebrow Just like all the other clinical elective rotation programs at various universities need you to be a medical student ( final yr for most) and dont accept graduates.. I am sorry if i got it wrong..
