hey!, I don't know the program, but a good parameter (for me) is fellowship placement...if you can get that info from residents....other plus would be the chance to do rotations at the Uni program...that would give you contacts, letters.
University program + J1 is the best combination for fellowship....

Completely agree with prueba, and remember it is a matter of personal taste and future goals... also sometimes depends a lot on visa needs...there are people who rather have a community program that offers H1B than a university that only offers J. If you want to pursue a very competitive fellowship and don't care about visa deffinitely try the university even if they offer J. And also remember that it is easier to get a fellowship with a J visa or so they say (don't ask me why rolling eyes ). Also do remember that there are a lot of great community programs that are university affiliated and have great felloship placement and education so always do your research about the programs. So the final question here is...what do you want for yourself, what do you look for in a program and how important is the visa issue for you?

Like prueba says- ask the chief residents or people who are matching for fellowships- did they manage to get their choice of speciality- That is the gold standard
University affiliations while they sound nice depend really on whether they exist only on paper or if actaully get to do do something there- eg do an elective- potential LoR from JHU would be great- but check if anybody has managed it before- Although you might be the first- remember that if nobody has done it before, there's usually a good reason

Like the others have pointed out- if you are ready to return back home after your fellowship- then J1 is the way to go
If staying back in the US is the priority then choosing a smaller place that might lack the prestige of JHU but then offers fellowships at the same place and sponsors H1 would be the best
The last option is of course to take the J1 now and worry about waivers later- which can be risky- nobody knows what the scene will be in 7 years time - or as one of my friends said- get matched - then get engaged & married to a citizennod

grin nice one guys!! jajaja I think the second option would help a lot more especially if you are a woman... first choice not so much guys even if you got married to a citizen while on J you have to do the 2 years thing unless you pay a lot of money on lawyers and try to do something about it... bottomline J visa is terrible if you plan to stay in the US after residency
