45 year old White male presents with abdominal pain radiating to back. He was hospitalized. During his stay, he developed tachypnea. Chest X ray showed infilterates in both lung fields. What is his FEV1/FVC?

A recent report shows that "at 12 months, lung spirometry tests demonstrated mild abnormalities that were stable over time (64% and 49% had <80% predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 sec [Fev1] and forced vital capacity [Fvc], respectively)."

increased. i think he got ac pancreatitis, non cardigenic pulm edema, resp distress, decreased compliance. and therefore inc FEV1/FVC.

i think it is decreased.

due to the presumed acute pancreatitis, forced expiration [which requires active use of abdominal wall muscles] will be severely restricted. greater decrease in FEV1, compared to FVC.

smoky, where did you get the qn from? how come no answer? anyone else want to discuss?

during tachypnea the thorax does not make comlete expasion, that is why the lungs behave like in a restrictice pattern. So FEV1/FVC is decreased or normal

  #9

it is increased,as all ARDS

JUST COMMEMORIZE:

All obs diseases,ch bronchitis,emphysema,both type,asthma,bronchiectasis,show DECRESE IN FEV1/FVC

WHILE ALL RESTRICTIVE DISESE:chest wall disorder:obseity kyphoscoliosis.polio

INTRINSIC lung diseases:ARDS which is asked in ur question above, nenatal resp distress, pnemoconiosis, sarcoidosis, good pasture, wegenernay hypersensitivity reaction affecting pul functions with tachypnea, shock, trama, gastric aspiration cause NON COMPLIANT lungs, with decrease FVC,more affected than fev 1.so casusing INCREASED fev1/fvc

Increased, Dr. Ruman is right. Memorize Obstructive decreased, Restrictive, like an infiltrate above is increased.
