How to differentiate atypical pneumonia from Influenza?

I am of the notion that both have same clinical features except for the signs of consolidation in pneumonia?

I am having this long standing question with me.....I am sure either you or your close friends might have suffered from sore throat, fever, body pain, dry cough with occasional sputum....Is this influenza or atypical pneumonia???
It might seem very basic but I am not comfortable with it still...

Any input?

What about history?
I don't think you can miss onset of influenza. Pneumonia will be late as complication.
In case of atypical - "walking pneumonia" - quite different.

History--Let's all the complaints for 3 days.......Should we start antivirals(oseltamavir) or Macrolides?

initial presentation of Influenza - abrupt onset, fever, running nose, sore throat, myalgia, fatique

vs insidious onset of mild cough, malaise, but not acute viral disease in atypical pneumonia.

influenza pneumonia--presents mostly upper respi infection..

atypical pneumonia--insidous onset,low grade fever,dry cough.. and on xray--intestitial b/l interstitial infiltrates.
