I think it's like a gambling. If they offer the position late in January, who can guarantee that the applicant is still available, i.e., hasn't taken any prematch somewhere else. Or who can guarantee the applicant is still interested in their program, after going through several interviews and saw better programs. So, the logic is, they (mostly less competitive programs) will try to lock in good candidates (i.e., meet their standards) as early as possible. They take advantage of the applicant's uncertainty (i.e., thinking whether he/she will get some more interviews or he/she will get match this seasson). If better candidate come a long the next day, if the program still has empty spot, they will take him/her. Otherwise, it doesn't matter, since they already filled out their spots with (from their prespective) qualified candidates.

Prematch is such a rare thing that it isn't worth our time... Thinking about it is similar to thinking about accepting an office employment offer after the interview... Even if there is a prematch, it will be offered to AMGs who graduated from those programs, that's the rule... In addition, this can be regarded as Irregular Behavior by residency programs, since it eliminates the major component of the match process - equal opportunity for all...

Prematch is legal -ONLY for FMG!!! it cannot be offered ot AMGs- then it becomes illega.

No offense, Justice, but you got the mob after you now. Actually, prematch is NOT a rare thing. A lot of hospitals, albeit less competitive, offer prematch so they can fill their spots before rank time. It is still commonly used, and Im sure many will tell you (on this very forum) that they were offered prematch positions before March.
