Hi guys, can someone tell me wht this could mean to us: some IM programs have more positions in PGY1 than PGY2 and PGY3 actually there are many programs which have this discrepancy. why is this so and wht does this mean to us, the applicants, i mean if we manage to get into the program, can they get rid of us in the 2nd year citing some reason because they dont have enough positions for PGY2 please reply....

Shailu is right...there cant be so many cuts every year, assuming that by cuts u mean kicked out

OMG...that is true..how come u dont have the same number for PGYs 2and 3....may be we will have to read the Resident Code of conduct real good..to avoid the unthinkable..

i checked in FREIDA..there is a discrepancy between PGY 2 and 3 in a lot programs...while many have the same number..seems the Pyramid system is what it is

i was actually not surprised by this pyramid or whatever because one of my seniors friend was kicked out after PGY1 from temple, philly; actually they did not cite any reason, they just said they couldnt give PGY2 !!!!!!!!!!!?????????god knows if this is so common to be important

to shailu, i browsed many programs, they say they have say 5/6 prelims positions, and the difference between PGY1 and PGY2 is still more than this prelim position number; if our guess was right PGY1-PGY2=prelim right, its not the case in too many programs, ofcourse you seem to be correct in some cases

hey ravedoc when I saw difference btn pgy 1and 2 ,thought of preliminary but never verified no.of preliminary. May be it is better to ask the program abt that, in case we get an iv from such programs.

the worst part is when we get an iv call frm a program whose details are not fully given in freida !!! as of the rest, yes i too think it is the best to call up and ask them

Actually, Id advise EVERYONE to ask their program (in IV) whether or not they have a pyramidal effect. Im going to do it, and I think Iserson's actually lists it as a "to do" question in every program. You certainly dont want to go into a program that will judge you from day 1, and cann you if they think your are inept. A lot ofp rograms listed in Freida have this discrepancy because a lot of first years are preliminary, and will naturally leave after year 1. Also, a good friend of mine told me that a lot of AMGs are ALWAYS on the move. They're always trying to upgrade their positions, so expect 1 or 2 to leave the program every year as well. Other than that, I personally am going to stay away from these pyramid programs. I dont need the stress.

I also have the same question. some programs in MD have that effects. I would not surprise why they have 100% of ABIM pass rate.

the AMG thing you said seems to be a reasonable explanation, but as you said i cant back away frm these pyramidal programs because its a luxury for me to do tht, i dont see myself very competetive, so i am lookin at all programs

other reason could be the program is expanding and you can see the discrepancy.
