Hi there,

for those who have experience in J1, do we have to get j1 from ECFMG or can the hospital or university be the sponsoring institution?

Is the statement of need from our country a must in both cases?

I believe the ECFMG is the one who is issuing DS-2019. The University will supply you/ECFMG with some documentation. Then ECFMG will send you DS-2019 with other materials needed to get the visa.

In any case, the Statement of need from your country of residence is needed.
