I think academic medicine refers to medicine practice based mostly on academic research, teaching culminating in teaching faculty/ professorship where as clinical medicine involves mainly routine clinical experience may be interest in clinical research usually ending up a practising physician or specialist.

i think academic is research and teaching only and clinical medicine means practising . well this is not a common term and there are different opinion on this and so u should have asked the PD only what exactly he wanted. propbably he might be testing that thing also: like answering without properlu undrestanding
