Smalley,
MD stands for Doctor of Medicine and is equivalent to MBBS or any other medical school degree. After completing residency, most will apply for board certification exams for their individual specialty board. This is equivalent to MS or MD in India. Board certification is not essential for fellowhip application but is important for medical practice. After fellowships in specialty or residency you do not get any named degrees.

Everyone's MD here and that bothers me a bit because people who come from countries where the British system is followed might have a bit of difficult time when they decide to go back for practice, because you have separate degrees for fellowships in the brit system [ DM for medical superspecialities and MCh for surgical ones] .

I mean how do you explain to people that your MD is actually a surgical degree, or that that FA*** is equivalent to that DM/MCh?

Residency and fellowship in the USA are not degrees - they are certification programs.

Well bbb, but the level of training is equvivalent to degrees in Brit system. difference is just the nomenclature. aren't it?
