Program Name: VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) Date of Interview: January 2008 Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Crowne Plaza discounte rate 70 off …paid like 60 … very good… What I did not like is that there is not a hotel shuttle to the airport, since it is in downtown….but there’s a “groome transportation” about 34 roundtrip Level of "stress" (0-10): hole day 0/10 …30 min. interview 5-6/10 How many interviewers: 1 How many applicants: 12 (2 IMGs) Tour included visits to: usual stuff Questions asked: here’s the difference: they changed the format and are asking “diff” questions….nothing related to your CV maybe to juts try to get to know you as a person….so questions where like different scenarios: how did you handle a specific conflict on a team?, what mistakes have you made and what have you done to change that?, about a case where I had many differences in background with a patient, etc….. even though I believe my interview was OK, I believe it is a bit stressful, and don’t know how good it would it is to asses a candidate…. At the end we evaluate the interview and they will probably asses if it worked out or not….in the mean time we get some stress there... Happy residents: yes / no / ? : YES, at dinner, and lunch we met a couple of residents. Atmosphere: 1-2 IMGs per year, most residents are from schools in northeast and south. Academic environment seems very good. Campus is in downtown, near I-95. City, how is living there?: not too expensive, close to DC, to the beach, Capital of Virginia, some interesting museums, a fair number of restaurants…etc. Research oriented: yes / no / ? yes, very….Scholarly activity is outstanding. Some departments are very strong. Prematch offers?: don’t think so Visa sponsored?: I believe it is just J1 What I liked the most?: campus, academic environment, PD and associate PD, location. What should be improved?: don’t know, probably the interview format Rate experience (0-10): 10 Conclusion: I did not know much about this program before going. And I liked it a lot. Good fellowship placements.

Program Name:Eastern Virginia Medical school(EVMS) Date of Interview:dec 2007 Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: nice sheraton hotel provided by the program, the best hotel I stayed in this interview season! Level of "stress" (0-10):1 How many interviewers:2 with PD and PD associates, very nice people How many applicants:4 Tour included visits to:wards, ICU, Library, the same as other tours. we observed the morning report in a friendly atmosphere, a movie from the city, interviews and lunch in adidition to the pre-interview dinner with the residents. Questions asked: tell me about yourself, how I found out about their program and why applied there, why internal, what is the core characteristic of an internist? general questions. Happy residents: yes / no / ? :yes, very happy Atmosphere: very friendly, mostly American, very few IMG City, how is living there?: Norfolk is OK, main population are african-american, not many foreign people, not international food/restaurant/grocery Research oriented: yes / no / ? there was a mandatory research requirement for the residents, in other word, it is a community hospital with good stress on research. Prematch offers?:not as far as I know Visa sponsored?:I don't know What I liked the most?:relaxed and friendly atmosphere, most residents mentioned they have a life outside the work. What should be improved?: 1.getting a fellowship is so competitive afterwards, each year 2-3 of 10 residents got a position somewhere, The hospital only has endocrine and geriatrics fellowships.2. very few IMG match rate Rate experience (0-10):7 Conclusion: I really liked the program, but having no IMG resident made me uncomfortable in communication, also the city atmosphere did not seem to be open to non-americans. overall a good program as a community one with easygoing schedule and relaxed house stuff, but I felt as a stranger there, both in the city and the program.
