Program Name: UPMC Presbytarian

Date of Interview: late October

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Hilton Pittsburgh (They have bus coming directly from the airport to the downtown hospital)

Level of "stress" (0-10): 3

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 11 ( all others r AMG )

Tour included visits to: Floor, ICU, CCU, Lab, Call room, Cafeteria, and Conference room

Questions asked: Introduce yourself, future endeavor, clarify confusion about my resume, qs about significant other. Oh, by the way, what if your senior is younger than u?

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes but since it's a major league program, the residents are demanded very much in terms of research and conferences.

Atmosphere: Competitive, over 95% r AMG. All other IMGs have publications or research exp. to get in. UMPC makes to honor roll of top 15 US best hospitals continuously ever since the evaluation began.

City, how is living there?: Great city. Pittsburgh is by far the most beautiful city I ve ever seen in US. A college city but not as cold as Boston. The suburb looks even better than CT. Cost of living is average. If u have a spouse, he/she may easily find job here as well.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes, very research-oriented. ALL residents have major journal publications and appear on ACP or JAMA annual press at least once throughout 3 yrs of training.

Prematch offers?: Yes for IMG, but have to reply before end of December.

Visa sponsored?: J1 or H1. If u wanna pursue fellowship, they ll only give J1.

What I liked the most?: Well-rounded hospital and very resident-oriented program. Large geriatric population. Totally computerized chart system( U can do everything at home too). Every one goes to the fellowship they wanna(Last year, over 70% residents go into cardio or GI fellowship).

What should be improved?: Too many AMG. Scutwork does exist.

Rate experience (0-10): 8

Conclusion: A very good program resided in a very attractive city. I would definitely rank it high, probably at 4th or 5th.

Hye decide,
No, mine is categorical. Know nothing about interscholar one, sorry.
They surely will offer H1 but this will put u in a very disadvantageous position when applying for their own fellowship, so they basically discourage u from doing so.

  #7

thanks mph..that was very helpful..good luck

UPMC sounds very good man...

Thanks MPH! I thought of wishing u luck instead I m wishing u Bayview grin

Hi mph,

May I know your credentails please?

I would like to know about my possibility to get an invitation form UPMC.

Did the PD mention that they will give prematch?

Thanks.

  #11

Yes, they ll give prematch for IMG if they want u. And probably not a good idea to rank them as an IMG if u dont get prematch as it's a major league program for AMG.

To get the iv there, strong research background is necessary.

I believe u can find mine somewhere in the credential thread.

If u havent gotten iv from them now, the chance is slim as they mostly issue iv to AMG from now on, to be frank. But GL anyway, as there r tons of programs in this country. UPMC doesnt mean it suits u.

Program Name: Conemaugh Valley Hospital

Date of Interview: November 14

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Days Inn provided by the program

Level of "stress" (0-10): 2

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 2

Tour included visits to: Floors,ICU, ER, Cafeteria, Telemetry floor, library and tour of Johnstown PA.

Questions asked: PD: What brings u too the hospital, About the paper I presented in Masters, What r my future plans, What research am I interested in, what fellowship I would like to pursue.

Ass PD: Medical questions related to community acquired pneumonia

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes

Atmosphere: Friendly

City, how is living there?: Very small town and very cold. Nothing much to do there. That is the major barrier for this program.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? No

Prematch offers?: No

Visa sponsored?: H1

What I liked the most?: Small program who r very dedicated for the residents. Financially very strong. Competitive salary.

What should be improved?: Research opportunities

Rate experience (0-10): 8

Conclusion: Very good community program. If I went for match I would have ranked it high as far as community hospitals are concerned. Faculty are very helpful and Friendly. Has mainly geriatric population. Not very diverse pathology. There is a very good camaraderie between the residents.

Program Name: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

Date of Interview: Mid Nov

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I drove…last minute decision.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 5 (“teaching session” with the PD at the beginning, he seems to be an excellent teacher)

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 11 (all AMGs)

Tour included visits to: Cafeteria (beautiful atrium), ICUs, ER, floors.

Questions asked: why this program, what can you bring to this program. About my research experience, projects (past and present), etc.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes

Atmosphere: Mostly AMGs. Residents like it, they say camaraderie is great, they hang out lot.

City, how is living there?: Location is awesome, you get out of the hospital and you have tons of cafeterias (I love coffee). About 50% of residents live at walking distance. Lot’s of things to do in Philadelphia: cultural, nightlife, restaurants, nice parks, etc.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? yes, tons of opportunities. Residents publish a lot.

Prematch offers?: Don’t know

Visa sponsored?: H1/J1

What I liked the most?: Location, research opportunities in the area I’m interested in, and many others. Nice PD, residents like him. Students stay there for residency and fellowship (good sign). It has something called “personalized career pathway” with opportunities to do a masters in Clinical Investigation, MPH, Research (2-2-2), etc.
Nice sign-out report system.

What should be improved?: more opportunities to IMGs.. Candidates sometimes complain about volume of private patients (less autonomy). Residents say it’s about 10-40%, residents say it’s not necessarily bad. (not a problem at all for me, balance is in favor of many good things). Parking is expensive, but salary is probably a little bit better than other programs in the area.

Rate experience (0-10): 9-10

Conclusion: I liked this program. It’s among my top 5 choices.

Program Name: Temple University

Date of Interview: Mid November

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I stayed at the Holiday Inn Midtown Express courtesy of Temple University. The hotel has an incredible location (2 blocks from city hall, one block from the walnut-locust subway station). The room was incredibly big and comfortable. I had 2 master beds an outstanding view of downtown Philadelphia, wireless internet, an iron with its support (which is super important for the suit) and for us girls a blow drier... EVERYTHING you need is here.
I got to Philadelphia by train from NY. I took the train at PENN station which by subway can be reached by the E blue line and down in penn station/ 42 st. I took amtrak which is incredibly comfortable, great in every possible way and amazingly punctual. They started boarding 10 mins before the departure... my departure was scheduled at 2 11 pm and exactly at that time a bell sounded and the train started moving! Amazing!! we had a scheduled arrival time at 30th station in Philadelphia of 330 pm and it arrived at exactly that time! I was so impressed!
So Philadelphia is at about 1 hour and 20 to 30 mins by train from manhattan.

Anyways the train cost was 41 dlls. I bought my ticket at amtrak.com. It is very convenient because you can look for all the departure times in there and pick the one that is more favorable for you. Once you arrive to the station you forget about doing lines and just go to a self-use machine (they have a bunch of them) and with your confirmation number you get your ticket printed. Once you have your ticket you are all set and you just have to watch the board with all the trains to see when boarding time starts and the gate that it will depart from.

You arrive to Philadelphia by train at 30th st station. It is really beautiful. It has a lot of shops and restaurants. Just outside the station is the subway station. The public transportation system in Philadelphia is amazing. It is called SEPTA. You can even plan your trip in their website. For instance you give the starting address and the finish address and the time in which you will be departing and it gives you a list of possible ways of getting there (subway, bus, train, etc) the exact times that the subway or bus will pass, where to take it and the total time for the trip. I thought it was amazing. Subway was extremely punctual, convenient, clean and safe. It works with tokens. A trip costs a token. A token costs about 2 dlls. After I got to 30th st station I took the subway starting in 30th st subway station which was just across the street and took the blue market st line towards the broad st orange line. You get down in 15th st and transfer to southbound broad st line. Just 2 stations away you get down at walnut-locust station. You walk one block and you will be at the hotel.

To get from the hotel to the hospital you just have to take the northbound broad st orange line from walnut-locust station (which as I said is 2 blocks from the hotel) and get down in Allegeny station. Walk about 2 blocks and you will be at temple university hospital. Don’t confuse with temple university campus which is 2 stations south of the hospital.

Level of "stress" (0-10): I was very stressed at the beginning about a 6. As the day passed by my stress level began to decrease because everybody was extremely nice and even my interviewers came to say hi and introduce themselves before my IV. This system I thought helps a lot because once you are in the actual IV you don’t feel as if you are just meeting the person and you feel much more comfortable.

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 20. All AMG’s mostly from Temple, Jefferson, George Washington, Cornell and Virginia…. and me… I felt weird at the beginning but after a while I was allright with being different.

Tour included visits to: wards, on call rooms, units, cafeteria

Questions asked: They have a very interesting way of managing IV’s. You have 2 Iv’s. Iv A and B. IV A is conducted by the PD or one of the associates and this is more of a professional IV. This person knows your CV and your application by heart so they stress it as much as possible. IV B is conducted by a person that does not know anything about you besides your name. It is a more relaxed IV and it is mostly designed to get to know you in a more personal level looking for interests and personality. I think it gives a way of having a non biased opinion of you.

During IV A they asked me about what I’m currently doing, how I see myself in the next 10 years, my carrier goals, they asked me about my community service and what I did during it and we ended up talking about my family, my personal heroes, my religion because it turned out to be a very relaxed and nice IV more like a conversation with someone that was interested in knowing as much as he could about me, not judgmental at all and I felt very comfortable.

During IV B I was interviewed by a chief resident from Venezuela. I noticed that they arranged it this way so that the IV could be even more relaxed. To my surprise the whole IV took place in Spanish so it was even better. We talked about everything… my family, my hobbies, my plans, my dreams, everything you could think of but as I said in a super relaxed way and more like a talk with a friend.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Super happy. They are all very good friends. The camaraderie is palpable. They truly help each other out and have their backs. There is no such thing as IMG’s or AMG’s, they all get along very nicely. They even made me feel like in home... it didn’t matter if I was an IMG. The dinner with the residents was so fun and everybody seems to get along amazingly well. They go out all the time as a group and they even invited me to a club the night after my IV for a party.

Atmosphere: As I said the atmosphere is amazing you feel like you want to be a part of it. It seems like working in Temple is truly a fun and enjoyable experience. Everybody loves the PD, the PC’s and the chairman. The PD seems to be the sweetest person in the world and she seems to truly care for her residents. The PC’s were incredibly nice to me.

City, how is living there?: I thought Philadelphia is an amazing city. It has everything you need with the warmth of a smaller city. The people is super nice I think they eat something to be nice and happy all the time because even on the streets people smiled at me, talked to me and made jokes… it was a real nice experiencenod.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes. They have a lot of research going on and they even give you away electives to do research anywhere you like in case you have a project going on elsewhere. If you want to do research you can do it even from the very start. Most of the residents (80%) are involved in some kind of research. If you don’t do research is simply because you don’t want to.

Prematch offers?: Yes… that is the sad part. As I understood all their positions for IMG’s are given through prematch. They give about 4 to 5 positions to IMG’s each year.

Visa sponsored?:
They give you the visa you want. If you want an H1b they will get if for you. I talked to the residents and they told me that they are extremely thankful with Temple because they are making sure that they have no visa issues and they even help them with letters and all kinds of paperwork so that they can get a GC as soon as possible.

What I liked the most?: The education system seems very good. The lectures are very well planned and are very enjoyable. They have a one to one system in which the upper year resident and an intern are teamed up for the whole year so that they can do together all the rounding and all the work so that the intern can learn without having the stress of being left alone. There are no pre-rounds. The rounds are done by the team. Call is q5. Vacations are 3 weeks on the first year and 4 weeks afterwards plus 10 holidays and 4 personal days. What I liked the most is that IMG’s can get vacations as 2 weeks cycles and can pick either Christmas or new year’s week and have that week and one before or after.

The electives are really good. You get 3 months of electives during your first year which is very great.

The fellowship placements are really great. Each year 99% of residents get matched to the fellowship of their choice. They can get fellowships in really prestigious places.

The atmosphere and camaraderie among all people involved in the program is super great. The IMG'S are treated as part of the family and are even given a lot of perks like the 2 weeks vacation. Every year at least one of the chief residents is an IMG.

The city is amazing.

What should be improved?: The computer system is useful and works but it is too old and needs upgrading. The good thing is that they said they were going to upgrade it at the end of this year.

The weather sticking out tongue

Rate experience (0-10): 9.5-10

Conclusion: This would be one of my top 5 choices. It is a shame that they seem to only give prematches.
