Program Name: Henry Ford Hospital System

Date of Interview: Early January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I stayed at the Inn on Ferry Street. It is the cutest hotel I've ever stayed in, it has this french look I absolutely love!! I even had my own balcony (huge one by the way). They are actually really old houses that were renovated and made into a hotel. They also have the nicest staff ever and they have a lot of great details like a fresh cookie in your room when you check in and they leave a couple of amazing cd's for you to hear. I listened to a french album from a singer named Natalie B. and the album is tittled Rouge. I am sooo buying it!! I recommend it to relieve stress also! I felt like a little french girl in my french mansion!!

Anyways, the cost of the hotel was 50 dlls which is nothing really because the rest is covered by the hospital. Detroit is a big city and to visit you need to either rent a car or get a cab or a shuttle everywhere you go because public system is a no no (It's very limited for what I've heard because almost everyone owns a car, I didn't even try it).

If you arrive to Detroit by greyhound you can call them and they can come and pick you up since it is relatively close, (they have a shuttle that works in a 5 mile radious). This includes the hospital which is about 4 miles away. So they take you in the morning and they come and pick you up whenever you are finished. They also hold your luggage for you. Unfortunally they don't go as far as the airport but they are really efficient in getting a cab for you, when I asked for one it arrived in 5 mins to the hotel entrance. The time between either the hospital or the hotel to the airport is about 30 mins. I shared my cab with another applicant and the cost was 20 dlls.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 4

How many interviewers: 2. The PD, in my case the new PD was on vacation so we were interviewed by the former PD, this was a quick but really nice IV, the second IV was done with the assistant PD's or other staff.

How many applicants: 12. 2 from Nigeria, 2 from Colombia, 2 from Jordan, one from Syria, one from Pakistan, one from Libanus, one AMG from Wayne state and me. Later on I will post about questions you should never ask during IV's and also things you should never do... this is the first time I see such things.

Anyways, I got to meet one of our forum members also... Hey Jazmil!! He is such a keen observer.... I was totally busted!!

Tour included visits to: Everything! All kinds of floors (Henry Ford has a floor for almost every subspecialty you can think of i.e. cards, pulm, hem/onc), ICU's, the library, the cafeteria, the clinics, on-call rooms, ER and they gave us a special tour of the sim area which is a totally high-tech simulation area in which they have simulators for every procedure you can think of even delivery!! yes they do have a sim girl that gives birth!! It is actually very interesting!

Questions asked: The IV was super super super super relaxed and nice!! The former PD only asked a couple of questions like what are you currently doing? what are your plans for the future? and think that was it. We only chat very nicely and I felt like he just wanted to know me as a person more than anything else. My second IV was done by one of the Faculty. He was the nicest guy ever, he even started the IV by saying that he wanted the IV to be more of a chat than anything else and he just wanted to know me also. We chat a lot about his plans for the program and he answered every one of my questions. He actually did not ask anything about me because he said that it was already on my application and he only wanted to see what I am all about (personality and so on). Super relaxed and great IV's.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Very very happy. They also get a long very nicely.

Atmosphere: Hard working but based on teamwork and respect to each other. Very relaxed and not malignant at all. Another thing that I loved is that they show reall appreciation for IMG's.

City, how is living there?: I think Detroit has a bad reputation and that is all. For what I seen it is a big city like every other and I did not feel threatened by it at any time. All the residents were very happy and said that there are obvious places which are dangerous but you don't really go there (again, like everyother city if you ask me) and a lot of them live in an apartment building which is inside the Henry Ford campus. I think that was neat. One of the residents joke about it and said that bed to floor time is about 5 mins... I thought it was funny hahaha

Research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes. They have a lot of clinical research going on.

Prematch offers?: I didn't hear about it and I don't think they offer any. I think they go for the match.

Visa sponsored?: That I don't know.... obviously J1 but I don't know if they offer H1B.

What I liked the most?: The atmosphere and the way that everybody seems to be very passionate about their work. I thought that it is a very very supportive program for their residents. The PC is amazing!, she really shows that she cares. I also loved the hospital itself and the computer system which is the best one I've seen so far (it rocks!). I think that the possibility of having an apartment close to the hospital is also a nice thing especially for us girls. I thought the structure of the program was amazing.

What should be improved?: If they had a rehumatology fellowship also it would be totally off the charts hahahaha (that's almost the only fellowship that they don't have)

Rate experience (0-10): 10***

Conclusion: The program is one of the best I've seen so far. It is amazing in every way I can think of. The city only has bad reputation but living there is not as it's portrayed in CNN. This is a program everyone should rank very very highly.

Program Name: MSU (Michigan State University)

Date of Interview: Early January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I stayed at the Kellogg center which is a hotel that is owned by MSU, it was covered by the program. The hotel is nice and comfortable but don't ever ask for an iron! (the iron they gave me was not working and burned a hole in my suit... yes!! the day prior to my IV, I had to run and find me a new suit at 7 pm...horrible experience!!). The staff is nice but they said that burning my suit was my fault eventhough I took the iron so that they could check it and see that it was not working.... they treated me like a silly girl that can't iron her clothes.... oh well I guess that is a compliment in some ways hahaha (trying to be positive here!) yes off course they did not pay for my suit or anything...

Anyways, the hotel has a shuttle that can pick you up everywhere (greyhound, amtrak, airport). In the morning the PC's assitant comes and pick you up at the lobby so you don't have to worry about transportation the day of your IV. They take you everywhere in one of their vans and they bring you back to the hotel where you have lunch with the residents at one of the hotel's restaurants which is nice because once you are finished you can just get your luggage (which they can store) and ask for a shuttle to take you wherever you want to go after the IV.

I arrived to East Lansing by greyhound bus. It is a one hour and a half ride from detroit. I took a flight to Detroit and then a taxi to the greyhound station which is about 30 mins away from the airport (the taxi fare was 50dlls or so). As I said you can call the hotel and they can come and pick you up at the greyhound station. You can also fly directly to Lansing (East Lansing and Lansing are 2 different cities but they are together so I guess it's the same thing) but it was way more expensive.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 4

How many interviewers: 3. The PD and 2 faculty.

How many applicants: 5. All IMG's, 2 from India, one from Jordan and another from Nepal.

Tour included visits to: The wards, the clinics, ICU's, ER, library, on-call rooms, cafeteria.

Questions asked: The usual: what are you currently doing, talk about your research (you should know your research by heart), what are your plans for the future, why medicine, and so on.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Very happy.

Atmosphere: Relaxed, everybody seem to get along very well.

City, how is living there?: It is a small college town, a lot of college students since East Lansing is like a small division of Lansing which holds the MSU. It has all kinds of outdoors activities (you will love it if you are an outdoorsie person), a lot of restaurants, bars and things for students. Also a lot of sports. I think it is a very cute town.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? They have some clinical research.

Prematch offers?: They do offer about 2 prematches per year, the rest goes to the match.

Visa sponsored?: J1 and H1B.

What I liked the most?: I think it is a small but very nice program, I thought the hospital is clean and well organized. I thought the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. East Lansing is a nice place to live also. And one thing I loved was that they give you a 2000 dlls card each year for food expenses... only if you were an overeater anonimous you would expend that much... I thought that is a good thing because you save a lot of money in food!! hahaha

What should be improved?: The computer system... I wans't a fan.

Rate experience (0-10): 9 for the program and a 0 for my burned suit experience

Conclusion: It is a small but nice community-university affiliated program. It is located in a calm and relaxing city and the atmosphere is layed back as the city itself. I think it is a good option among the community programs because they even have some fellowships (ie cards) and they have showed good fellowship placements plus 100% pass rates on the boards in the last 3 years. Should be ranked highly among community programs.
