Program Name: UHIMRP

Date of Interview:

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Waikiki area

Level of "stress" (0-10): 1

How many interviewers: 1

How many applicants: 2 (The other one is AMG)

Tour included visits to: 2 university hospitals

Questions asked: Clarify the confusion about CV and future goal

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes, very!

Atmosphere: Every body gets along very well with each other

City, how is living there?: What can I say, it's Hawaii. Very East Asian-friendly(I like). Cost of living is super high.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? If u wanna do research, they ll support u full-heartedly, esp. Cardiology research. Hawaii has some of the leading experts in cardiology, and the chief is now the editorial of American Heart Journal. And a lot of residents participate in the Honolulu Heart Study and NHS.

Prematch offers?: Yes(but they ll tell u in the email, so if u didnt receive this notion or they give u a scheduling date later than mid.November, that means u r not a candidate for prematch) for very outstanding IMG.

Visa sponsored?: J1 only

What I liked the most?: Diverse Patient population and very HIGH volume of patients(U ll easily reach cap of 15 patients in 1 hour after u start work!) No scutwork at all. Very friendly environment. Enjoyable City(like doing vacation for 3 yrs). Tons of National-level research in Cardiology and Geriatrics. Fellowship chances(every one gets into fellowship including cardiology and GI bcz all residents have strong publications due to linkage with those 3 studies I mentioned above). Good IMG/AMG ratio(1:1). If u r a Japanese/Taiwanese/Thai/Korean, u ll easily feel u r back home here, and most of the residents they take r from these 4 countries.

What should be improved?: Visa, and no night float in Queens' medical center(on call overnight).

Rate experience (0-10): 9

Conclusion: It's Hawaii, period. A very good program with tons of research and fellowship chances. Enjoyable atmosphere. The PD and related personnel look highly on residents' opinion to improve the program constantly. I would rank it high for sure. Life is sometimes more important than prestige.
