Program Name: CCF (Cleveland Clinic Florida)

Date of Interview: First week of December

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Hawthorn suites previously amerisuites. Nice hotel they give you a special "Clinic fare" at 90 dlls per night. They have complimentary shuttle to the clinic which I though was very good. This shuttle can take you there in the morning and pick you up at the end of you IV you just have to call. Hotel has everything you might need including wireless internet in every room, nice flat huge tv screen and even breakfast which is actually a super nice buffet which sadly you don't get to eat because you will have breakfast at the clinic but if you can stand 2 breakfasts I recommend the hotel buffet.

Public transportation in the Ft. Lauderdale/ Miami area is super terrible!! Don't even try it!! I've always pride myself of being an adventurer and I always try public transportation but believe me!! You don't want to try this one!! It took me 4 and a half hours, one shuttle, one train, 3 buses, only God knows how much walking and hours of waiting at the stops just to get to my hotel!! After this I decided to stay at my room for the rest of the evening and did not have the chance to even see the beach!! Suckkkkksss!! Word of advice from a traveler to another In Florida RENT A CAR!! The very minute you get to the airport!!!!!!!! Believe me you'll need it, you will save money and you'll actually get to see something because the distances here are very large and the public transport is terrible because very few people actually use it so why design a good transportation sytem??

The clinic is located at Weston Florida which is about 20-30 mins from Ft. Lauderdale and about 45 mins or something from Miami. The Hawthorn suites hotel is located at half of a mile from the clinic.

2nd word of advice: They might say that you will be done by 3 pm but mark my words you have a very huge chance of finishing at 3 40 pm.... don't ever schedule your flight before 6 pm!! I almost lost my flight!! I swear I had Vfib during my ride to the Ft Lauderdale airport I actually got there 30 mins before my flight which was scheduled for 515 pm.....

If you don't want to listen to my advices and decide to don't rent a car then get to the hotel by shuttle. Super shuttle has their vans waiting outside the airport all the time, if you share a ride they will charge 20 dlls and if you want a private ride it will cost 44 dlls. If you want them to pick you up after your IV to get you back to the airport you need to call 2 days prior and settle an appointment to pick you up and believe me you want them to pick you up after 4 pm... before that you might not make it and your shuttle will leave and will not wait for you!! ask meee!! and you'll end up having Vfib and bitting your nails and part of your fingers on your way to the airport and if you actually make it to your flight you will end up flying with your suit on which is not the most confortable way of traveling!!

Oh well I just don't want anyone else to experience what I had to experience... hope you guys listen to my advices.=)

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 25!! 5 or so AMG's, a lot of FMG's (students from Caribbean schools most of them were actual US citizens from the Florida area that could not study at the states and decided to go and study there) and some IMG's especially from India, Southamerica and so on. The PC gave us the email adresses of all the other applicants which I thought was a very good idea because we could share rides from the airport or back to the airport and you can save a lot of money. I even went to dinner with two of the applicants the night before. Both super nice girls one of them is actually a member of this forum... hi Malitha!! We were in the middle of dinner when she asked if I was Glo MD and I said that's me! jajajaja I actually enjoyed a lot talking to both of them... by the way Malitha if you are reading this I will send the photos as soon as I'm back to San Diego... I'm still traveling!

Tour included visits to: Library, cafeteria, units, ED, call rooms, wards, clinic.

Questions asked: I was interviewed first by the PD who is super nice. He only asked me why I decided to study medicine in the first place... I answered and then he said oh well I just wanted to see if you speak English and then he continued the rest of the IV in spanish... we chatted really nicely, he did not ask anything else about me.. I actually asked if he wanted to know anything else about me jajaja I never thought I had to ask that and he said oh! forget about that tell me what YOU want!... so that was a very layed back interview.

My second IV was done by the GI deparment head. This was in English and he asked several questions. He said why CCF, why florida, if I didn't mind moving all the way from San Diego, what was I currently doing, how do you see yourself in 10 years, what are my fellowship plans, why rheumatology? (when I told him I was planning on pursuing rheum), what do I look for in a program?, what was the most challenging moment in medicine so far (I don't have to tell you my answer I think you might already know it) That is what I remember.

No medical q's. Only thing is that the noon conference was done by the PD. and he asked some questions to the audience but there is no problem if you don't answer. Although they do notice when you answer one because I answered a question and the PD asked me to raise my hand took a good look at me and during my IV with him his first question was: You were the one that answered the Von Hippel Lindau right? and from then on the IV was super nice.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : It's freakin' miami!! (Who would not be happy!)

Atmosphere: Very laid back and peaceful. All the staff was really nice and focused on teaching.

City, how is living there?: I mean it's freakin' miami what else can I say? =)

Research oriented: yes / no / ? They have only clinical research and they support it but you have to come up with your ideas, choose a mentor and go from there.

Prematch offers?: It's hazy. I heard from one of the residents that they do offer prematches but I'm not sure.

Visa sponsored?: J1 and H1B

What I liked the most?: The PD and all the staff seem very friendly and took the time to help you out. They care for education a lot. The board passing rates have been 100% in the last 3 years. There are fellowships and they give preference to their residents (especially in GI and Cards). The hospital is not too big but is deffinitely beautiful and clean.

What should be improved?: I think the program is very good for a community program. But maybe if they had a little more research going on would be better. And if they had rheum fellowship far better jajaja just kiddin' they told me that getting rheum fellowship somewhere else was deffinitely doable and I believe them.

Rate experience (0-10): 9

Conclusion: This is a very good program. Very laid back and very focused on education. There are very good fellowship opportunities. If you like small programs (9 positions) you will like it here.... plus it's freakin' miami!! =) (There.... I said again! I couldn't help it!) =p
